Mari Oliver had for years refused to recite the Pledge of Allegiance at her Texas high school. Then, in her senior year, her teacher gave the class an assignment.
She and the other students would have to write the pledge.

I have no problem with what the teacher did, but the ingrate kids can go move somewhere else if they don't like it here. There's a whole world for them to choose from if they think they can find it better some where else.

This is settled law—Supreme Court decision back in the early ‘40s IIRC. Involved Jehovah Witnesses I think. While we may share the teacher’s sentiment about the Pledge, students are not required to recite ergo, to write also.
I hope she uses the money wisely and invests in a proper education that will carry her far.
