Celebrated author Margaret Atwood says ‘enforced childbirth is slavery’ in response to the leaked draft decision from the Supreme Court that could potentially overturn the Roe v. Wade.
Atwood, 82, has seen her seminal work The Handmaid's Tale - and the recent TV adaptation - become oft-cited by liberals warning of the consequences of conservative policies on social issues. Activists will often dress like characters from the show at protests.
In an edited extract from her new book Burning Questions published in The Guardian Sunday, Atwood made the point that anti-abortion laws could force women to choose 'illegal' forms of abortion.
'Nobody likes abortion, even when safe and legal,' she wrote. 'It’s not what any woman would choose for a happy time on Saturday night. But nobody likes women bleeding to death on the bathroom floor from illegal abortions either. What to do?'
She then goes on to say that abortion is a matter of choice and freedom and that the restrictions placed on the practice would leave half the population 'enslaved.'
'Women who cannot make their own decisions about whether or not to have babies are enslaved because the state claims ownership of their bodies and the right to dictate the use to which their bodies must be put,' she wrote.
She argued that the only similar consequence for men would be a reinstallation of mandatory military service, though she points out that they at least are given provisions throughout their service.
Atwood was also critical of America's maternal healthcare system, wondering why Washington might force women to have babies, but not offer complimentary prenatal care, postnatal care and social programs to help raise children.

I personally think the book and the movie (first) were far-fetched in terms of premise and believability. This more recent series is just an exercise of ascribing some sort of justification for abortion as it is today.
Woman who are smart enough to read Ms. Atwood’s books should never be in a position to need an abortion... They are smart, and because they are smart and can read, they should be aware of multitude of birth control measures and medications that can stop them from having an unwanted child.
Using abortion as a form of birth control should not be an acceptable method for birth control.
Woman who can’t read and are uneducated, due to the terrible education system that allows such a tragedy. Should be allowed one pass... But one only.
yawn, They need new material.
Oh good, the whole world was waiting to hear from this dumb broad.
Recall that Obamacare mandated insurance coverage for birth control for all women. Woman have no excuse for accidental pregnancies although I suppose a few sperm could slip through.
She’s Canadian, so she’s already a slave.
“...forcing women to feed toddlers they don’t want is SLAVERY...”

Planned Parenthood was founded not simply as an organization for limiting the size of families in general but more particularly to reduce the reproduction of the black population in the United States, as Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger herself noted.

“I’m curious, there are also a lot of children who, after they’re born, become unwanted and inconvenient - should they be aborted as well?”
Don’t give them any ideas. Euthanasia of such persons, along with disabled parents, siblings and other family members would probably appeal to the likes of Atwood. After all, according to her logic, being forced to care for these people is slavery if you don’t have the funds to have them cared for by someone else.
“Washington” is not “Mother Nature”.
Having a baby is Mother Nature, doing what Mother Nature does.
I have the Right to Free Speech because it is inherent in my being. The Constitution restricts the government’s desire to violate my free speech. The Constitution does not require the government to provide me with a soap box to stand on.
Atwood is tacitly admitting that so many women have very little forethought and engage in practices they eventually have to try and reverse. But their shame and personal regret for their unwise decisions can haunt their memories till the day they die.
Don’t want a baby, don’t have sex. Further, maybe get sterilized to avoid it. Should be a condition of abortion—sterilization, guilty or no-contest admission of murder, jail or probation. Time to create some accountability.
what a kook
A Handmaid’s tale is so outdated. The earlier BRAVE NEW WORLD will be the future. Children will be grown in test tubes. Women will be obsolete.
I remember fifty three years ago, you could buy a comic rubber disk for birth control.
On one side was printed..”Place on the inside of the Left Knee.” Other side said “Place on the inside of the Right Knee. Now squeeze them together.”
Keep an aspirin firmly between your knees and you won't get pregnant.
Exactly.
Every abortion should result in mandatory sterilization.
If that were done, this nonsense would come to a screeching halt.
Biological fatherhood begins at the conception of each baby.
That fact is treated as extraordinarily relevant by every woman who wants to extract cash from the biological father for 18 to 21 years.
In contrast, that fact is treated as irrelevant when it comes to fathers wanting to protect the lives of their daughters and sons between conception and birth, and when it comes to divorced or never married fathers who want to be treated as parents.
