Phil Mickelson suffered a staggering $40 million gambling loss between 2010 and 2014, according to his biographer.

Alan Shipnuck, a former golf reporter for Sports Illustrated, has a Mickelson biography entitled, “Phil: The Rip-Roaring (and Unauthorized!) Biography of Golf’s Most Colorful Superstar,” which is coming out later this month.

In a book excerpt published on the Fire Pit Collective website, Shipnuck cites documents that were compiled when government auditors conducted a “forensic” analysis of Mickelson’s finances during the time he was embroiled in an insider trading case involving famed professional gambler Billy Walters

$30 million to join the tour and recruit players. He’s got to play in 20 events and prize money totals $20 million per tournament and $5 million in team play. He’ll be covered until the next round of losses.

Rumor was he switched endorsement deals earlier in his career and the signing bonus was sent directly to bookies in Vegas.

“I wonder if he made that much peddling drugs? Hopefully Saudi Arabia can make him whole.”

I was wondering the same thing. Especially, after he involved his daughter in his latest Psoriatic Arthritis “wonder drug” commercial.

How much money does a person have to lose before they figure out that they are not very good at gambling?

He should have used that money to buy part of a casino. Only way to come out ahead.

Lefty don't care. Just threw down the gauntlet in a story that got zero exposure, because the PGA are fearful that permabans will gut their premium player exposure ... and the string of nobodies winning on Tour right now does not help their cause ...

Mickelson’s agent, Steve Loy, issued the issued the following statement: “Our client Phil Mickelson is officially registered to play in the PGA Championship as well as the U.S. Open.

We have also filed a request on his behalf for a release to play in the first LIV Golf Invitational in London, June 9-11. This request complies with the deadline of April 25 set forth by the PGA Tour to compete in a conflicting tour event.

“Phil currently has no concrete plans on when and where he will play. Any actions taken are in no way a reflection of a final decision made, but rather to keep all options open.”

In other words, 'approve my request, and I'll play all three tourneys.
Deny my request, and watch who shows up with me in London.'

That much in gambling losses would immediately flag the attention of every casino in Las Vegas in 2022. Today’s casinos are a lot more aware of their public perception and someone losing US$40 million in gambling could get that person denied access to a casino there.

Although not Tiger-quality, Sergio Garcia -- always entertaining -- has committed to London today.
