David Birney, star of TV’s “Bridget Loves Bernie” and “St. Elsewhere” and Broadway’s “Amadeus,” died Friday at his home in Santa Monica, Calif., after a five-year battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was 83.
The veteran actor’s passing was confirmed by “life partner” Michele Roberge, the New York Times reported.
Birney first gained mainstream fame in 1972 opposite his future wife Meredith Baxter in the CBS sitcom “Bridget Loves Bernie.” The show was popular — slotted between ratings juggernauts “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and “All in the Family — but short-lived thanks to controversial protests by Jewish groups who disagreed with the “intermarriage” of Birney’s Jewish cabbie character, Bernie Steinberg, and Baxter’s Bridget Fitzgerald, a Catholic grade school teacher from a wealthy family.

I saw some of the show, “Bridget Loves Bernie,” when it was on (I was very young), and met Meredith years later. R.I.P.

St. Elsewhere was a favorite show of mine, and we’ve been able to rewatch the series on Hulu.
I felt for him through the marriage-ending issues with his wife, Meridith. Bizarre.

A taxi driver. Can’t relate.

It was NOT really popular. It did better than "Fay" and "Beacon Hill" and "All's Fair", maybe, but that's about it. It lost a quarter of the "All in the Family" audience who had to change the channel, and change the channel again for Mary Tyler Moore.
Move "Bridget Loves Bernie" up against Monday Night Football or even "The Partridge Family" and it loses big. CBS could do better, and they did.
MASH, Bob Newhart and even the HORRIBLE Maude did better in that slot.

I was in Med school when St. Elsewhere was on. My whole class was addicted to it!
We hoped we could learn things from it.
David Birney was one of my favorites.

My parents were obsessed with St Elsewhere, Hill Street Blues and LA Law. I liked the first two hated the last. I always wanted to punch Corbin Bernsen in the face.

I never got that show. I’m such a Texas Redneck it grated on my nerves. I’m sure for somebody it meant something but I always thought Maude was just plain mean. Watched maybe 5 minutes and off it went. Again Texas guy but too much New York for me.

Did you ever see him on Murder She Wrote? He was on four times, but the first one he was a charlatan psychic.
