The show was popular — slotted between ratings juggernauts “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and “All in the Family
It was NOT really popular. It did better than "Fay" and "Beacon Hill" and "All's Fair", maybe, but that's about it. It lost a quarter of the "All in the Family" audience who had to change the channel, and change the channel again for Mary Tyler Moore.
Move "Bridget Loves Bernie" up against Monday Night Football or even "The Partridge Family" and it loses big. CBS could do better, and they did.
MASH, Bob Newhart and even the HORRIBLE Maude did better in that slot.

I never got that show. I’m such a Texas Redneck it grated on my nerves. I’m sure for somebody it meant something but I always thought Maude was just plain mean. Watched maybe 5 minutes and off it went. Again Texas guy but too much New York for me.
