When going on our HONEYMOON, we booked our seats weeks or months in advance. On one leg of the trip they either combined 2 flights into one or were using a smaller plane. Mass chaos and when checking in; it seemed like the gate people were having to manually assign seats. At first they had seated my Bride and I at opposite ends of the plane.Im not sure how they worked it out but we were able to sit together,d although not in our chosen seats. We didnt want to ruin the day by pushing the issue.
One time I booked myself a window seat on a plane. As I boarded and got to my assigned seat, some other guy was already sitting there in my window seat along with his girlfriend who was sitting in the middle seat. I checked my ticket to make sure I had the right aisle and the right seat. I did.
I don’t recall my exact words, but i said something along the lines to the guy,”um, excuse me? 24A? That’s my seat.”
The guy didn’t give me the courtesy of turning his head to look at me while I was talking to him. Instead, he just looked ahead and said, “no, no. 24A is the aisle seat.”
I looked at the little metal diagram above the seats that indicated the guy was wrong. I was about to look for a flight attendant to set this guy straight when his girlfriend got up out of her seat to look at the metal diagram I saw and she said, “he’s right. That’s his seat.”
The guy, without a word and again without looking at me got up out of my seat and I got in and he settled in to his aisle seat. No apology either. Not a word to me. As I sat there in my seat, I thought “next time get yourself a better travel agent, a#ole”
Are all these “news” people narcissists who think that somehow, in some way their thoughts and actions are important?
I used to routinely give up my seat on San Francisco trolley cars or the BART train to women and the elderly. At some point women acted like I was being chauvinistic or making a pass, especially younger women. Elderly began acting like I was putting them down. So F it, I quit offering. Too much pain for the low success rate.
Years later I was sitting on BART and a woman nearby had to stand as no seats were available, but her body language was of hoping I would offer her a seat. People nearby started to eye me and one even whispered if I would give her my seat.
By then I was jaded and just ignored them all/. Lady, women’s Lib and all that. If you can work like a man and dress like a man and act like a man, then you can stand like a man. You wanted equality. You got equality.
It is sad. A declining, pre-woke but progressive society beat much of the good and polite out of me. This is how lofty societies crash and burn. Punish me often enough for good manners and deeds, and I am less likely to commit them.
You can only kick a dog so long...
Disagree with you here.
When I have to fly, I purchase my ticket, log onto the website, and choose my seat.
That is where I want to sit.
That is the seat I paid for.
I will not accommodate the incompetent or lazy.
If you have to make accommodations, you should have done it when you booked the ticket.

You brought me such reminders of my grandfather, a Texan and a gentleman, born in the late 1800s. He was most definitely racist, in today’s definitions, but he instantly leaped to his feet on a bus and gave his seat to any woman, black or white, or any person with a disability. He never saw the conflict between the views he was taught as he grew up, and the actions he took as an incredibly good person. Many thanks for bringing him to mind.
Am enjoying this discussion.
Wow, that’s your hill to die on? I play life as it comes to me, and in a situation where there are plenty of seats and someone wants to sit with someone else, I have no problem being nice. If the flight is full, I make sure that an attendant supervises the transaction so that I don’t get musical chair’d out of my seat.
“I also will only sit in an aisle seat and also near the front. No I’m not giving it up unless it’s also an aisle seat and also near the front.”
Agreed, even more so if I have paid extra for that economy plus aisle seat near the front.
I have a fun airline story. This happened years ago before there was instant flight cancelations and re-booking. I and family members were flying overseas from LA. Our connecting flight from Denver was delayed. When we got to LA, we made a run for it and were seated in business class. A few minutes later another party showed up with the same seating arrangements on their boarding passes. Since we were seated we took the position that possession is 90% of the law. Slight mistake, the other party was upgraded to first class. Business class was still awesome.

Well, those things die hard. That was the way I was raised, and even though it seems like an anachronism to many, I won’t change.
Besides, my wife smiles admiringly at the dinosaur as he tromps through the jungles of the Mass Transit.
I was the last person to board a flight from Chicago to Atlanta several years ago. Wading through the chaos, I found my seat and enough space in the overhead to hold my carry-on luggage. As I was hefting my bag into place, I looked at my seat assignment and noticed that I would be seated next to a very attractive brunette. “A pleasant flight,” I thought.
Finally getting my stuff stowed, I was ready to take my seat when the woman asked in a rather loud voice, “Do you mind swapping with my husband?”
“Sure, Honey. But who gets custody of the kids?” was my answer.
That section of the plane was laughing so hard they had to stop the pre-flight announcement.
For my part, there may have been a little pre-flight alcohol involved.
