No, I will not switch airplane seats with you

I am an assertive driver. Not aggressive, because that word is too aggressive. But I am decisive with speed. Still, if I’m attempting to merge and someone lets me in, I will roll down my window and wave to them. If it’s raining, I will just have a wet hand.

I pray before meals. Not every meal. But meals with meat.

I don’t ride city buses anymore, but when I did, I wouldn’t just give up my seat for women, elderly people and those who appear to have a physical disability, I wouldn’t even sit if the bus was packed and seats were limited. Few things made me feel better about myself than when I did this. There was no difference, in my head, between me standing in the aisle, satisfied with my sacrifice, and a soldier diving on a live grenade to save their troop.

I also perform all of the boilerplate chivalry: the opening of doors, the holding of umbrellas and even the walking closest to the curb. So, if you’re with me, and a car jumps the curb, we’ll both probably die, but at least I’ll die first.....

But there is one thing I haven’t done. Will not do. Will never do. Will grow angry enough at you to throw spitballs at you if you ask me to do. And that’s move my seat on a plane to accommodate you so that you can sit with your friends or family or concubines or whoever else you’re flying with.

I’ve done it a few times, especially when it appears that it would separate a mom and a young child. I don’t necessarily want to entertain someone else’s kids on a plane. I’ve also given up a few first-class upgrades to some older vets on some domestic flights. But, each and every time, it was my choice.

But the best time was when I refused to move out of my aisle seat when a, let’s say large woman (you can figure out the ethnicity/color and probably be right), demanded that I move over so that she could have the aisle seat. The attendant’s response was priceless, “Ma’am, he’s Global Services and with the exception of the pilot’s seats, he can sit anywhere he chooses; and you can choose to not sit on this flight.” Even if they would have offered to move up to first-class, I would have refused just to watch her squirm up against the window.

WHO wouldn’t change seats, UNLESS the new seat is next to a crying baby, a lefty woman holding a CAT, etc.

Depends on the situation. Having spent over 40 weeks/year flying around the globe, I typically pick seats for a specific reason. I have changed and/or exchanged seats on a few occasions, but there would need to be a very good reason for it. A person spending over $60k (United Global Services) a year with an airline gets that privilege.

What if you’re next to a 900 pounds woman who reeks of garlic, knits and has a service dog?

I sat next to the fat guy once. Actually, he sat next to me on the last damn open seat after a really long week with a tough client. He was also the chatty type, and made a comment about how he was sorry that I was having to sit next to the big dude.

But since I didn't want to be badgered all flight, I proceeded to tell him that I was happy he sat next time to me in case the plane crashed as I wouldn't have to search far for food. He immediately clamped up and stared straight ahead for the next few hours.

If two 23 year old people wanted to sit together that badly, they should have gotten their seating squared away earlier...I don’t have any consideration for that.

Others may apply...

This guy is sitting proof that it is not necessary to express every thought that comes into your head.

I wish a woman traveling with a toddler HAD asked me to change seats so that she could sit next to her child on an 11-hour flight. Mom was on the aisle, the child was by the window, and I was stuck in the middle between them. Guess who had to wait constantly on the child and help her with her meals, drinks, snacks, movies, toys, etc. and listen to her babbling when she wasn’t watching a movie? She did not take a nap during the entire flight. At least she never cried.

My wife were assigned seats across the aisle from each other. Mine was seat B hers was seat D on a plane with 2 seats on each side. When I took my seat the “lady” in seat A looked at us and asked, in a demanding way if I’d change places with my wife because she did not want to sit next to a man! Figuring she must have had major psychiatric issues, I looked at my wife and she said, well, OK!
We changed seats and for the next 2 hours I was glad I did but felt terrible for my wife who had to deal with the psychopath, borderline-personality disorder passenger next to her. She called the flight attendant every 10-15 minutes to complain about something. Demanded to speak with the Captain about her alleged mistreatment by the airline and harassing the flight attendants as they were trying to serve drinks and basically do their jobs. My wife did her best to just ignore her, refusing to participate in dialogue with her.
When the plane landed, she was met by airline employees in suits and some type of legal authority (should have been men in white coats!). So in this case, I was glad I changed seats! My wife, not so much !

“WTH is this person???”

Some people feel the need to announce their weird neuroses to the general public. I don’t know why.

Mostly it’s cheapskates that don’t want to spend the $15 for an assigned seat, so they probably shouldn’t be flying anyway.

I pay extra to sit in the exit row.

I wasn't aware that was an option. The last time I flew, seats in the bulkhead and exit isle were first come, first served. Now, they're allowing you to pay for that reserved seat? Is that all airlines?

Well I’m outraged by the WP author/fool equating giving up a seat to military service - AS IF!!! then I realized leftist.

Consideration and manners towards women, children, elderly, and those less fortunate, should not need to be commented up on.

Unless you are a leftie then please tell us all how great of a person your are and pile it on higher and deeper too.

I have always volunteered to switch seats in order to allow couples, family, friends, etc., to sit next to each other. I don't see the big deal in that.

Now if I paid extra money for an extended legroom seat and they wanted to switch me to coach, I would consider that an unreasonable request. But that situation has never happened.

Seems like civility is becoming lost in our society.

Whew. I am with you. I was on a six hour flight with someone who had a very young child that squalled for the entire time, probably was having ear problems, and I took that for what it was, but...on that cattle car-like Iberian Airlines flight on an old DC-10, it was an uncomfortable flight.

It was good that the kid was several rows in front of me, but...that screaming was quite penetrating. I didn’t have noise canceling headphones in those days.

I did feel sympathy for the mother, too. That had to be hell.

Most. Southwest doesn't have assigned seating, so to get the exit row, you pay additional to get the early boarding. I'm 6'4" and believe me, it's (usually) well worth it.
