Baby Bald Eagle Rescued After Parent Accidentally Kicks it From Nest
WLWT ^ | May 2, 2022

The chick was sleeping Monday on one of its parents' feet when "the parent took off, and it just accidentally knocked the chick out of the nest," research ecologist Peter Sharpe, who oversees the bald eagle restoration project on the Channel Islands in California, told CNN. Sharpe and his team are monitoring 21 bald eagle nests on the islands this season.

The eaglet fell between 10 and 15 feet and landed in a steep gully, Sharpe said. The nest is monitored with a video camera that captured the fuzzy youngster's dramatic fall.

The rescue team arrived Tuesday, and Sharpe and two colleagues used ropes to reach the chick, then performed a quick health check before returning the baby to its nest. Sharpe will return to the nest in two to three weeks to put an identifying band on the eaglet's leg, take its measurements and estimate its sex, he said.

I love birds, but the American Bald Eagle population is getting out of control.

You would think one of the parents could pick the chick up with their talons and fly it back to the nest.

I was wondering that two? Would the talons damager the eaglet? The parent seemed kind of careless.

It’s common in the bird world to literally kick out certain chicks. There are two main reasons. If the adult bird feels that the harvest is lean, they will starve some chicks until they die so the others will be stronger and survive (that Darwin thing). The other is because they perceive one or more of the chicks is weak, doesn’t fight for food, etc. Similarly, the perceived weak chick will be intentionally starved.

If a chick is “kicked out of the nest, it is usually not a mistake. If it were, the parent would grab it and bring it back.

Humans messing with nature.

Dogs pick up their pups all the time. Never saw blood yet.

Maybe the bird was a bad bird and mama kicked him out before he got into his teens.

Right before the incident the eaglet was squawking to mama, “Dead fish again? C’mon mama, you can do better than that!”

They went there and interfered with mother natures culling of the weaklings. Now we are going to have a polluted gene pool in the eagles.

I think that you are correct.

I read somewhere that eagles typically lay two eggs, several days apart. The first-born hatchling is expected to live. The second is the insurance policy. When the first-born develops enough to show a high probability of continued growth and life, the eagles jettison the second eaglet out of the next, presumably as a treat for the foxes below.
