As of Wednesday, cashiers at the store will no longer be bagging bottles for them, though they might supply empty boxes when available. All New Jersey retail, grocery, and pharmacy stores, along with restaurants and other food service businesses, are banned from giving out single-use plastic bags, as well as foam containers, though there are some exceptions.
What about switching to paper bags? Supermarkets can no longer provide those either.
“We have long-term customers that still probably don’t know there is going to a be a bag ban,” Millington said. “So we’re trying to educate everybody as they come in. Right now, we do a lot of bags for wines and anything we sell.”

Here’s the one thing that stood out in my mind as I left the store: Anything you do to make it inconvenient for the customer can’t be good for the CONVENIENCE store business.
Bttt
And yet, my steaks, pork chops and chicken thighs are on a styrofoam plate and wrapped in plastic. My hamburger chub is wrapped in plastic. My milk is in a plastic jug. I buy plastic bags to pack the kids lunch. My toilet paper and paper towels are wrapped in plastic. The cash registers and credit card machines are made from lots of hard plastic. I put my fruit and veggies in a provided plastic bag. My bag of salad is in plastic. My cauliflower is wrapped in plastic. My donuts are in a cardboard box with a see thru plastic window. My bologna is packaged in plastic. My lunchables are in plastic. Seafood and shrimp trays, in plastic. Ice Cream in cardboard. My Marie Callender’s, cardboard and plastic. My tater tots, plastic. Need I go on?
The world has truly gone insane.
I bet.....reminds me of the great new York city plastic straw ban of 2022.
Democrats are freakin’ idiots
Yep, plastic bags of all things.
2021
“plastic bags of all things”
And to top it off, it’s gonna really impact the way the mafia can whack somebody
“Thick heavy cardboard, that’s ok!”
Think! As available using unpacked boxes destined for trash.
“...Masks will cause long term damage to oxygen utilization in humans
Today, people willingly breathe in these microplastics by attaching masks to their faces. And, as the face masks are discarded en masse, the microplastics break down into the air, soil, and water, before finding their way into human blood and organs. Masks strain, suffocate, and poison people in an acute manner, and over the long haul, the microplastics break down in the environment, silently infiltrating the blood, and depriving red blood cells of oxygen. In one study, microplastics latched onto the outer membrane of red blood cells, hindering their ability to transport oxygen throughout.
At the height of the mask mandate hysteria, the world population was consuming 129 billion disposable face masks each month, or approximately three million masks every minute. Many of these masks are discarded into the environment or dumped in landfills, where they will break down and pollute the soil for years.
Disposable face masks contain an inner layer of thermoplastic polymers that are melted together into porous sheets. When they break down in the environment, these polymers and polypropylene fabrics break down into small plastic particles called microplastics. These microplastics leech into the soil and water, and ultimately make their way into human blood, tissues, and organs. These particles also travel through the air and are often taken in through the lungs. The long-term environmental and human health effects caused by mask mandates are yet to be fully realized. These negative impacts will be measured in human blood in the form of microplastic contamination.
Plastic pollution, exacerbated by masks, affects human hormones, childhood development...

WA has similar law. It’s about saving the ocean from plastic pollution, which is, I’ve read here and there, a serious problem causing death of fish and sea birds.
I’m all in favor of fish and birds. But what we have now instead of single-use plastic, is tough, stronger, re-usable plastic that is far, far worse for fish and birds. I have a pile of them and take them with me to the store time and time again.
Paper bags are fine for the ocean, but you have to cut down trees to make them. A renewable resource at least.
Possibly interesting note: Decades ago, when I lived in SF, my neighbors were a lovely Chinese couple with three adorable kids. Invited me to dinner several times, great food, good company. And a nice Christian family of churchgoers. Then suddenly they moved away, bought a fabulous house in the most expensive neighborhood with money she made.
Her business? First person to import plastic bags from China and sell them to grocery chain.
Not good enough. New Jersey should ban ALL bags, and ALL boxes. EVERY container of ANY nature should be BANNED.
See what you did with your foolishness, you hall monitor KAREN
NJ, the only state in the nation that doesn’t allow you to pump gas into your own vehicle now will not permit you to get a paper or plastic bag at a grocery store.
NJ, on the leading edge of totalitarianism.
The county nest to ours in MD still has plastic bags, but you have to pay for them. Lidl has paper bags - which you are also required to buy.
Yes and yes to everything you said.
I go to Natural Grocer. a wonderful nationwide chain that recently opened a store in my hood. Pricey but excellent food and aisles of supplements with knowledgeable employees helping you decide what to get. They do NOT provide plastic bags and are careful about their packaging materials. Not perfect by any means, but at least they are aware and trying.
They even have laundry and dish soaps with few chemicals in biodegradable plastic jars. Going to try those products when I run out of Dawn and Tide.
****Here’s your handful of soup.******
Good point...Is a soup container considered a single use container?
NJ citizens actively pursuing third world status. Just don’t take away their “full service” gas stations and they think all is good.
2+2=4
I know now what you did then!
My New Jersey family predicts it will be a disaster as most liberal programs usually are.
