The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!
NE OK... weather,.....Tues, Wed Thu...looks like rain...but in the 50’s 60’s...........
The music he chose to start the video was not something I wanted to hear ....
“The weather outside is frightful, the fire is so delightful....”
Yup, late garden start for me this year. May 15 has been our last frost date; however, planting by the end of April usually works out ok, but it looks like May for this year. This will work out better for my leg situation, but I’d rather have warmer weather. BTW, my weather app is showing 91 for next Sunday - we’ll see how long that lasts before it changes. 😎

Don’t know what I’m supposed to see there. If I try to go any further than his section, like here, https://www.weatherbell.com/premium/joe-bastardi/some-observations-from-the-start-of-a-late-tho-likely-not-last-snow, it wants me to log in.
First year on the property, ten years ago, there was 6 inches of snow on the ground for the frost free date. Hasn’t happened since.
No, scroll down to just under the pictures of the meteorologists and their bios. It’s right under there.
Took me some searching to find them the first time, too.
See post 105.
Found it. Video right on the home page.
See weather predictions above for first week of May. If Joe Bastardi is right, we may have given you bad advice.
Thanks. I found it this time!
This year I am especially suffering from SAD. I am like a sun loving plant. I can grow in partial sun or shade, but not very well, and I thrive in really sunny locations.
I hear you.
The times I have felt the best were when I was in FL on vacation. Aside from the break in the routine, just the warmth and sunlight is very therapeutic.
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is just “hibernation”...
I do it every year.
I never had to hibernate growing up in the south. I miss it down there A LOT at this time of year.
Almost 2 inches of snow in parts of Indiana today.. Crazy !!!!!

July, Aug, Sept
Thanks for that - I did see that we will have a cold spell that week. We will be home so I plan to cover the tomatoes at night. That has worked for me before.
We are way behind on snow this season, and we’re still in a drought from last year. Actually, I prefer a dry growing season over a wet one.
That said, I fear it’s going to go from frigid STRAIGHT to hot and humid. And my garden and I BOTH hate that!
There's a fairly new method called biosolarization that sounds interesting.
Biosolarization combines solarization with anaerobic soil disinfestation (ASD). ASD creates temporary anaerobic conditions in the soil that encourage anaerobic microorganisms that break down available carbon sources, producing organic acids, aldehydes, alcohols, ammonia, metal ions, and volatile organic compounds that are toxic or suppressive to soil pests and diseases
https://attra.ncat.org/htmlpub/soil-solarization-and-biosolarization/
Advantages of biosolarization over regular solarization:
The time needed for biosolarization is five to nine days in order to accumulate volatile fatty acids to inactivate weed seeds and soilborne plant diseases
All have to be done in summer but the biosolarization can be done in slightly cooler locations than solarization. Good for prepping a spot in Summer where you want to grow stuff that Fall or the following year after a fall/winter cover crop of legumes.
Weather update from Joe Bastardi at Weatherbell. Not looking like a warm-up anytime soon for a lot of us. Grrrr!

Drat!
Problem is - they aren’t flipped on my phone - or on my MacBook. Some flip on postimage and some don’t. I tried flipping them to the side on my computer - and they still flipped the wrong way once I tried on postimage.
Still trying...
