Science experiment gone wrong: Teacher sets student's hands on fire, causing serious burns

Some of the most popular science experiments in middle and high schools involve fire. And in many cases, under supervision and done correctly, those experiments are great teaching opportunities that really stick with the students.

But one student involved in a fire-based experiment at Granbury Middle School in Texas will always remember April 1 as a horrible day, and he has a long road of recovery ahead of him.

The experiment in question involved alcohol and fire. It's a common trick, often seen used on money, and sometimes demonstrated on hands. An item is coated with rubbing alcohol or some form of it and set on fire. The alcohol generally burns off before the fire can damage the material underneath -- except that for one student, something went wrong.

The school has not shared specific details, and the incident is under investigation, but what it known is that a 37-year-old female teacher allegedly put hand sanitizer on a 12-year-old boy's hands, set in on fire and seriously burned the boy.

Granbury Police Lieutenant Russell Grizzard told "Today" that the boy sustained "possible third degree burns on his hands."

He also said that the experiment had been done multiple times throughout the day by that teacher and another one in different classes.

"It looks like every class that day had a group of students volunteer to do it," Grizzard told KXAS-TV. "There was also another classroom that was doing that same thing where there was no incident."

The student was initially taken to Cook Children's Hospital in Forth Worth, then Parkland Memorial Hospital's Burn Center in Dallas. The boy's father apparently posted about the incident online.

As a result, the teacher resigned and is now under criminal investigation.

Hand sanitizer contains alcohol. It is not pure alcohol

That’s a shame.

Sounds like that teacher really had her classes fired up.

I used to work in a DOD laboratory. Of course we got the same annual safety training as well as Federal, State, and local inspections. Our lab had a supply of chemicals for the many various analyses that would come up from time to time, some rarely.

At one point we were told to inventory our chemical stores and we were forced to dispose any chemicals that were not listed in one of our in house analysis procedures, for safety. Of course this did not include any of those rare analyses without a written procedure that come up.

Essentially, chemicals were too dangerous to be left in the hands of chemists.

Just proves that government school teachers have below average IQs. They can't compete academically while in k-12. They don't have good SAT/ACT scores. Those that can manage to get into college choose EDucation indoctrination as a major in college. Learning to do make bulletin boards is the most rigorous course they have to take in college.

I won't stop abusing and ridiculing teachers until they get a real education, admit that they are failures, and are against woke, CRT, LBGT alphabet soup crap. They are the problem.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

So many on here torching the teacher for her bad decision. She was simply matching the other class’s lesson. This shouldn’t count as a strike against her. But alas, it’s obvious she felt the heat from the situation and fired herself.

This high school lab stunt is dumb as a rock. If had ever done anything like this accidentally much less intentionally, I would have been fired and kicked out the door the same day. So stupidly wrong.

I saw a flaming hand once in college freshman chemistry lab. Idiot adjacent to me was evaporating solvent from a liquid as part of lab experiment. The solvent was flammable so a steam bath was to be used. The guy tried to speed things up by using a bunson burner (open flame). In moments he was holding a ball of fire and after a few seconds, dropped the round bottom flask into a sink located between he and myself. Large fireball then the flame gone. All this occurred in 5 seconds, perhaps a little more.

The guy had 3rd degree burns on the hand. He lived down the hall from me in the dorm and I never saw him again. Dropped out of school to deal with the medical stuff was the dorm rumor.

Don’t people ask “what could possibly go wrong if I do this” anymore? We were taught to always think of the adverse consequences that could occur, before we did anything we knew we shouldn’t be doing to begin with.

In ninth grade, I read about the exothermic reaction of glycerine and potassium permanganate. I didn’t know at the time that the potassium permanganate must be finely ground for a rapid reaction.

I mixed some glycerine with coarse crystals of KMnO4 and waited. Nothing! Nothing at all. I thought “Oh well” and tossed the mess on a paper towel into the metal classroom trash can.

Ten minutes later the trash can was ablaze. Oops. Fortunately, we got the fire out before the school burned down. Because of the delayed reaction, nobody knew what had happened and I think I just kept my mouth shut.

At least I didn’t burn my hands.

I won't stop abusing and ridiculing teachers until they get a real education,

I got my degree in electronics engineering and an MBA

That is after 9 years in the USAF where I maintained Minuteman III ICBMs. After that I worked 12 Years in aerospace QA and we put several Tomahawks into downtown Baghdad.

OBTW after that, I did 16 years then retired as a vocational education teacher teaching electronics, engineering and physics classes to high schoolers.

Ironically, I agree with your statement. Most teachers that are EDs mentally have never left high school. They choose teaching so they can perpetuate their Peter Pan fantasies of staying in school forever.

So for the next experiment does hand sanitizer work in flame throwers?
