New Windows 11 Security Feature Will Require a PC Reset (Is this a Great Reset? Maybe...)
Thurrott.com ^ | Apr 7, 2022 | Paul Thurrott

“Smart App Control is a major enhancement to the Windows 11 security model that prevents users from running malicious applications on Windows devices that default blocks untrusted or unsigned applications,” Microsoft vice president David Weston explains. “It goes beyond previous built-in browser protections and is woven directly into the core of the OS at the process level. Using code signing along with AI, ...

our new Smart App Control only allows processes to run that are predicted to be safe based on either code certificates or an AI model for application trust within the Microsoft cloud.
...Model inference occurs 24 hours a day on the latest threat intelligence that provides trillions of signals.”

Smart App Control is interesting because it will be enabled by default on new Windows PCs in the future. But if you upgrade to whatever version of Windows 11 that enables this feature on an existing install, you will have to use Reset this PC to reset Windows 11 and clean install it. That is, I believe, unprecedented.

It was Lenovo. They all pieces of sh*t. I made the mistake if buying two different models over the course if a few years. Neither lasted more than a couple of months.

I’ve been using Thinkpads for 20 years and not had problems but I buy off-lease business laptops. The early ones I used were IBM but then they changed to Lenovo and quickly sold the line to china.

I got the wife and daughter new fancy gizmos because that’s what they wanted. They got what they asked for.

She left me since then and daughter went with her. Two months later, their PCs crapped out. Karma’s a biotch. Now they share a chromebook LOL.

Son and I are sitting here with several year old, off lease business units that are going strong but they’re not cute, pretty etc. Plain black business laptops that were leased to big businesses by the many thousands.

When/if I do get a newer one, I’ll go from the W series we have to the P series and again, it will be an off-lease, high performance business model that was leased by the many thousands. Sometimes many thousands per big company. When they hit ebay off lease, you can tell because ebay is flooded with them. That also makes them cheap.

was just thinking that- a lot of stuff I’ve used over the years was unsigned- and necessary to run certain things- now they won’t run?

“For it is a mans number”

Meaning it may be created by man under the direction of Satin to be worshiped by man. But controlled by Satin and used for his purposes.

Possibly goes along with “Let he who has understanding”.

You need to open your mind to different possible meanings.
This fits better than you think.

Will not be able to buy or sell without the number....

The way I read it, unsigned apps are subjected to scrutiny by some undefined Microsoft-operated "Artificial Intelligence" in the cloud, that talks to your computer and determines whether you're allowed to run it. So presumably, a) signed apps run okay, and b) unsigned apps run only if they're approved by the Microsoft AI cloud thingie.

ah ok, so they ‘can run’ but only if approved- i wonder how many they will approve=- what a way for microsoft to dominate over other companies- either play ball with them or lose their approval for the app-

My Google operating devices seem to function on the Internet.

I wish I could convey the severity of my facepalm at this statement. Yes, let's feed the beast that is Google. They're on our side, after all.

No thanks. I’ll stay with my trusty, 2009 Win-7 Pro x64 and Opera.

If the battery is removable, take it out and unplug the cord as well. That is generally necessary to get a hard reboot of notebook computers. If that doesn’t work, check with the manufacturer to find out if there are any key combinations that will force a hard reboot.

I’ve been quite happy with Windows 10 for 6 years. Previous experience suggests that skipping the next version after a good one is the way to go. Windows 12 will be the fixed version of Windows 11 if history repeats. By then, the computer I built in 2015 will be ready for a rebuild anyway.

I guess I’m safe to give away my spare Windows 7 machines that I built in 2008.

Will this be like twitter but with Windows AI deciding which apps are ‘dangerous’?

Do not concern yourself with such matters, Citizen. Your betters and their algorithms will determine what is acceptable, and you will be provided with the proper apps for your assigned tasks. Move along.

There’s something called a novo button. You use a toothpick in a hole to push it. Supposed to give you factory restore screen but it does nothing on either machine.

Batteries are not removable.

I’ve seen where people say the power light flashes repeatedly one these models but these power lights come on once for about a second and then nothing. Don’t even get a bad hardware type of beep like most machines I’ve used. I’m going to have to open them up and remove anything I can like wifi card, one stick of memory if there’s more than one and then try swapping to the stick if two.

Or I might just stick them on ebay “as is for parts” and give her the money or some of it, maybe. We’re separated.

Try holding down the nuvo button while starting the machine. If that doesn’t work try holding the nuvo and power buttons for 30 seconds.

Many people will lose all their files because Microsoft wants to control what is on your computer.

Ubuntu seems to be Stallman’s favorite distro, which is suspicious right off the bat. Then it’s named after some African word for “Can’t we all just get along?”, so I tend not to go there.

"Windows, like Macintosh, and even some Linuxes (Ubuntu), is rushing headlong towards increasing restrictions, in the name of "security" and "safety". I understand it, and I recognize its utility for the masses. But there are times when I prefer "the animating contest for freedom", in Samuel Adams' words, and wish they'd just leave me to care for my own defense."

It is, to a degree and in some way, analogous to gun control, in that due to the abuse of some then all must be handicapped. If one can use Windows 95, 98SE, XP, and W/10 for an average of 8 hours a day on the Internet over the course 20 years with only two viruses (which was under 9x), thanks and glory to God, and with much customization, then they should not be placed in a form of protective custody. Of course, proving such a track record would require more monitoring by MS overlord I suppose.

Which opens up another can of worms in an age where "misinformation," Climate Change" and other political incorrectness is considered so dangerous that one may foresee ever increasing monitoring of actions, from typing to driving.
