Study finds treatment that may help older people with dry eyes due to loss of sex steroid hormones (NAD+ supplement NMN restored meibomian gland function)

Health issues for people over age 60 commonly involve eye-related conditions such as dry eyes.

More than 70% of people in this age group are believed to suffer from meibomian gland disorder, the most common cause of dry eyes.

A study reports that the loss of sex steroid hormones produced by the enzyme 3-hydroxyl-steroid dehydrogenase, or 3-HSD, causes the condition, but it can be treated with nicotinamidemononucleotide, or NMN, which is a non-steroid agent.

"Meibomian glands are found in the eyelids and have a role in producing the oil that coats the eyes. Without this oil, tears evaporate, " notes project leader Masao Doi.

Despite the high frequency of meibomian gland disorder, it does not appear to be life-threatening. Nevertheless, the chronic condition could lead to serious eye damage to the eyes if left untreated.

No curative therapy is currently available for meibomian gland disorder because the underlying molecular mechanisms are still unknown.

Doi adds, "We found that the enzymatic activity of 3-HSD peaked in mice just as they went to sleep. This observation suggests the timing of the drug administration is important."

The oscillating activity of 3-HSD is attributed to the abundance in the gland of the 3-HSD cofactor nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, or NAD, which is a coenzyme found in all cells and commonly sold as an over-the-counter supplement.

Confirming this point, the study shows that topically administering nicotinamide mononucleotide, or NMN, a precursor of NAD, elevates the amount of NAD needed to reboot 3-HSD activity. Adding NMN periodically to the meibomian gland of snoozing mice reduced atrophy of the meibomian gland, effectively alleviating dryness in the eyes.

Doi states, "Our study shows it is possible to avoid this problem not only with local treatment but also with a non-steroidal agent, such as NMN."

Although this study applied it to the gland, immediately touching the eyeball, NAD/NAD+ precursor NMN is commonly available in capsule form. Other precursors of NAD/NAD+ might perform similarly, such as nicotinamide riboside.

My wife and I take a combined form with both from Alive by Science.

The “Take Charge Of Your Health” Ping List

This potentially high volume ping list is for health articles and studies which describe something you or your doctor, when informed, may be able to implement for your benefit.

Now keeping a new list (“Common/Top Issues”) for conditions expected to only concern at least 1% of the population. Ask to be on either the “Common/Top Issues” or “Everything” list.

Please email or private message me if you want on or off of a list and of which list you desire.

The sublingual is what reversed menopause for me. I am on the LIPO capsules as well for a combined dosage of about 750 mg/day, also through RenuebyScience (formerly Alive by Science, Alive by Nature, etc...)

I personally know people who take >20 pills/day, and they’re not organ transplant or cancer patients.

Go ahead: Take another. /s

Seriously, however, Keratoconjunctivitis sicca is a condition first described in 1933 and today is postulated to affect over 3 million adults in the US.

Logical question: Why?

The underlying question is why this condition is increasing in incidence year over year.

But don’t you dare deviate from the AMA dictates for your healthcare, let alone read the microprint accompanying your prescriptions... /s

Mine clog up, eyes burn. Had a BadCataract surgery, then Lasix, tear ducts are permanently sealed.

I use slighty hot wet wash cloth several tines a day and Dry Eye Drops, minor help with both. Restasis caused an infection with 1st drop.

Did they laser your tear ducts? If not, then you still have them, but they atrophied.

Instead of wet wash cloth, fill a cotton sock full of dried uncooked rice. Throw it in the microwave for 10-15 seconds.

Less hassle.

I found eating fish oil works well in combating dry eyes. (Like Carlsons the most.)

Cold, dry days I’ll boil water on stove to raise the humidity.

Try Systane night gel 4xs/day. Retaine MGD formula is a good one too.

“Logical question: Why?”

Computers?

Humans can’t think and blink at the same time. It’s above our pay grade.

With the pandemic, computer time went way up and so did dry eye cases.

My eyes didn’t get horribly dry until they removed my thyroid. It is such an irritating problem.
