Fairview, OR — An 84-year-old couple was attacked on a walking trail in Fairview on Sunday, with law enforcement saying a homeless man hit the husband with a rock when he was defending his wife.
911 records show that “the caller found a subject, was just beat up on the trail."
According to court documents, the couple was walking along the Salish Pond Trail when Philip Bradley, a transient living in the park, hit the woman. Her husband stepped in to protect her.
Bradley is then accused of hitting the man in the head with a rock and putting "his hands around [the husband’s] neck, pushing him down in the water.”
Two 16-year-olds saw the altercation and began yelling and distracted Bradley, giving the couple enough time to get away.
Police later found Bradley under a bridge along the trail, where he told law enforcement he has lived for two years.
“Mr. Bradley said he had smoked methamphetamine around 6:00 a.m. that morning but said he did not feel the effects at that time," court documents show. "He said he drank a 40-ounce bottle of Old English malt liquor and some wine during the day."
Police reports state that Bradley admitted to having his hands around the victim's neck and was trying to kill him. He also reportedly told police he thought the victim was someone else when he first went after him.
Residents in the area say they are shocked.
“That’s really scary,” Lisa Barton Mullens said. “It’s always surprising when something terrible happens but I do know there have been some homeless people that are having some mental problems on this trail.”
Bradley has been booked in the Multnomah County Jail. He faces an attempted murder charge.

That poor couple. Anyone would be shaken up by such an encounter and being beaten up, but for the average 84 y/o, such an event incredibly traumatic. These two may take a while to get over it, if they ever fully do. The damage is not just physical but emotional.
