Concrete made with old tires proves itself in real-world setting

With a notoriously large carbon footprint, concrete is a prime target for researchers developing greener materials for the future of construction. A number of studies have shown how old rubber tires can be used to make versions that are stronger, more heat-resistant and flexible enough for use as a road material. A new study has assessed its value in real-world settings by using concrete containing old tires as a residential slab and monitoring its performance over several years, where it outshone conventional concrete in a number of ways.

The type of concrete at the center of this study is known as crumb rubber concrete, and its production involves grinding rubber tire down into crumbs of a similar consistency to sand. These crumbs can then be used to replace a certain proportion of the sand typically mixed in with the cement, water and other ingredients to form concrete, lessening the reliance on the natural material and giving the discarded rubber a second life.

Scientists at the University of South Australia and Melbourne's RMIT University have sought to take this material from the "lab to the slab," noting that while it has shown a lot of promise in laboratory testing, its reliability in real-world construction requires further exploration.

To investigate its practical application in residential settings, the scientists poured two crumb rubber-reinforced concrete slabs at the University of South Australia campus in 2018, along with two conventional concrete slabs. These formed the entrances to a civil engineering laboratory that sees a lot of foot traffic, with the team closely monitoring the materials' performance over time.

stopped reading right there.

I assume they all want us living in huts and tee-pees......not long before they implement the Khmer Rouge Phnom Penh plan and just force us all into tents like in many Cali towns already.

...Until the steel belts start rusting, producing heat, and porosity from the rust in the concrete.

It seems some moron tries to come up with a replacement for concrete. Portland cement is one of the most plentiful things on earth.

Sure, let’s replace it with car tires.

The processing necessary to pulverize rubber and steel to grains the size of sand has to use incredible amounts of energy.

These people are stupid.

Coincidentally, an enormous pile of burning performance tires is technically called a “nascarneration.” :-)

I'm just trying to understand the mix you're describing. Do you mean that the trial usage was a blend of concrete + recycled asphalt?

Spent asphalt has been heavily recycled for many years in making new asphalt. It's excellent for reuse into new pavement duty.

Oil refinery trivia…. Asphalt oil is the heavy residual oil remaining after all the good stuff has been stripped and distilled from the crude oil. The only thing lousier than asphalt oil are the slop oils removed from water at the front end of the wastewater treatment plant. This slop oil is the feed to the Coker Unit, that uses steam and temperature to yield petroleum coke. The coke product has a high energy content and supplements coal as a fuel.

not for road,

can you imagine effects of frost, salt and water?

It was a combination of granulated rubber and regular road asphalt. Laying it down was a struggle, keeping it warm enough to spread and compact but not lighting off from the tiger torches was a real balancing act. Then after it was laid longevity became an issue.

A pretty good-seeming idea that failed.

” Said to be every bit as durable as rebar reinforced.”

I’d have been more impressed if you’d said “strong” rather than durable. But there are places where less-strong concrete works well.

Is there a shortage of sand that I am unaware of?

Yes there is! Poland has bee importing sand from the Middle East for a long time. Their plan has been to drill in the sand for their own oil.

After decades of failure, Poland has realized that somewhere there has been failures in their drilling process. Many Polish engineers have lost their jobs nd some are blaming Middle East governments of sending poor quality sand.
