Turkey’s military has deactivated a mine that had drifted in from the Black Sea, setting off a loud explosion in the process, days after Russia warned several of them had washed away from Ukrainian ports.
On Saturday, defence minister Hulusi Akar described the object, first discovered by fishermen in the upper Bosphorus strait, as an old type of mine and said he was in touch with both Russian and Ukrainian authorities about it.
Maritime traffic has safely been opened after coordination with the Turkish coastguard and naval forces, the minister added.
Earlier on Saturday, the coastguard said two-way ship traffic had been suspended after a civilian commercial vessel detected a mine-like object.
The coastguard had warned vessels to stay away from the round object bobbing on the waves, and a dive team initially moved in to investigate.
Russia’s main intelligence agency said on Monday that several mines had drifted out to sea after breaking off from cables near Ukrainian ports, a claim dismissed by Kyiv as disinformation...

Oops—I guess they found one of those “disinformation” mines.
Freepers need to find some as well.
;-)
In the old WWII movies, they would blow them up by shooting them with a rifle. Does that work?
Hi.
Just shoot the damn thing...
Oh, wrong turkey

During Desert Storm, while docked in UAE, the Navy told us (US container ship) to prepare to go through a possible mine field.
It was my job to use an emergency created software to calculate our stability and survivability should we hit a mine. My calculations showed the ship would not sink (we were a very large ship) but the bow would be blown off.
The ship was one of those container ships where the bridge and all living quarters were on the bow.
Ukraine to Turkey, “hay buddy can you get that... thanks a lot!”
Impeding passage through the straits is another reason for alarm for Russia’s neighbors. Not much has been noted about Turkey closing the straits to Russian warships. That gives Turkey much leverage to influence the peace when the hostilities end. Turkey might demand a peace treaty before reopening the straits to Russian warships, effectively bottling them up in the Black Sea until a peace treaty is formalized.
Turkey has closed the straits to *all* warships, not just Russian ones.
Depends on the mine design and how stable the explosive charge is. The pressure sensitive mines will sometimes detonate when shot. The magnetic sensing ones won’t - and this is assuming a mine that is still working to spec. An old mine? Anyone’s guess.
WW1 mines still turn up all over the planet let alone WW2 ones. This may have zilch to do with the current conflict.
I always wondered where the Bitcoin mines were.
Now I know.
“Turkey briefly stops traffic”
Haven’t seen that. I’ve seen a swan stop traffic. Kept stepping into the roadway trying to get back to the lake. I finally got out and walked it across.
Now you tell me
