In the old WWII movies, they would blow them up by shooting them with a rifle. Does that work?

Depends on the mine design and how stable the explosive charge is. The pressure sensitive mines will sometimes detonate when shot. The magnetic sensing ones won’t - and this is assuming a mine that is still working to spec. An old mine? Anyone’s guess.

WW1 mines still turn up all over the planet let alone WW2 ones. This may have zilch to do with the current conflict.
