Man Who Sucker-Punched Salt Lake City Police Officer At Airport Faces State, Federal Charges

Salt Lake City, UT - Police have released security and bodycam video of a bizarre attack on a Salt Lake City police officer inside the terminal at Salt Lake City International Airport (video below).

The incident occurred at about 8:40 a.m. on March 12 as two officers were doing a foot patrol on the lower level of the airport concourse in baggage claim, KUTV reported.

Surveillance video showed the two officers walking along and the suspect - later identified as 31-year-old John Baydo of Tacoma, Washington - approaching them from behind.

The video showed Baydo set down his backpack near a column in the Delta baggage claim area as he approached the officers, according to charging documents.

Then he walked right over to the officers and sucker-punched the one closest to him in the head, nearly knocking him to the ground, KUTV reported.

Authorities said Baydo immediately turned his attention to the other officer and appeared as though he was going to punch him, too.

“[The officer] was caught completely off guard and was unable to defend himself against the attack. At that point, Baydo turned towards [a police officer] and took a fighting stance,” according to a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) task force report.

Instead of a fighting stance, the guy immediately puts both hands on his head in a surrender posture. That precluded retribution by PD, or if the PD hit back, it would have resulted in brutality accusation. My bet is a trained antifa type trying to provoke a response.

I once attended an AA meeting where a newcomer was wrestling with the concept of a, "higher power." One of the oldtimers told him that if he doubted the existence of a higher power that could keep him from drinking for the next 24 hours he should punch a cop and that would remove his doubts.

Maybe this guy was an agnostic alcoholic.

The attacker hopefully will show up in an orange colored jump suit with hand cuffs.

He is so guilty of hitting this police officer.

Worse than that. Getting sucker punched can kill. There are many cases of people being sucker punched and dying...Striking their heads on concrete etc etc.

Held on a $2500 bond. At most, he pays $250 and he is free. I have lately heard of 3% bonds.

He knew it and obviously wanted to get arrested for assaulting an officer.

Either that or serious mental illness. The video was actually funny after the attack, he went from a fighting stance to surrender in like 1/4 a second.

He’ll be getting a settlement from the city in the millions. The puncher, not the officer. The USA is completely upside down.

There should have been a beat down before the arrest...
