➡ The problem: Hal and Carol accept an invitation to a house party. Hal sees that there will be 30 people attending the party and says to Carol, “I bet you $100 that at least two people will have the same birthday there!”

Should Carol take that bet? (Assume that birthdays are distributed equally over a 365-day year.) . . . . . . . . . --------- Don't look at the solution until you figure your answer .................

Not really so rare if she gets nailed every 4th Memorial Day.

My daughter had a son on her birthday and my son was born on his Great Grampa’s birthday. No family party is ever without 2 people sharing a birthday.

That’s a lotta people in the same house. Certain locales frown upon that kind of thing these days.

Tell her you want 71/29 odds, this way your payout is $320.

You throw in twins, the birthdays aren’t evenly distributed she would still come out on top if you did this for multiple parties.

Glad I don't live in any of them. We've had that many over for Thanksgiving.

A1 = 1, A2 = 2, etc.
B1 = =(366 - A1)/365 then copy down formula
Answer = 1 - Product(B1:B30)

Yes, I am well aware of the gestation period. The implication is the bride was already pregnant before the wedding.

Very true. I am 67 y.o. and have only encountered one real life person that has same birthday as me (10/2). I guess it’s one of the low birth date days.

I like your style using Excel I love to mess around with excel for things like this, I would say yes make the bet

Basically you’re betting $100 to win $100 or a 1 to 1 odds like betting on a coin toss which is 50 percent probably if you have a 70 percent chance of winning a 50% probably situation then make the bet

# Besides that a lot of stuff happens on Christmas eve and New Years. In a group as big as 30 people stuff probly happened. Kind of surprising it’s only 71%. Gotta refigger!

I’d be really surprised if the distribution of people is equal across all 365 days. Probably should look that up.

Replying to self. I looked it up. Some days are considerably more popular to be born on than others...

I was recently at a (birthday) party, where it was discovered that I and another person had the same birthday, though 50 plus years apart. Also there was a set of twins, so 4 people out of about 30 people, maybe 35, but not quite that many. In my case, at that party, the probability held true.

Fascinating chart.
Someone had just too much time on their hands.
July 4th has the least birthdays.
