The highly transmissible subvariant of omicron known as BA.2, or “stealth omicron,” is the dominant strain circulating worldwide, according to the World Health Organization.
Virtually all new coronavirus cases reported to WHO are from omicron, which has several subvariants. The BA.2 subvariant was responsible for nearly 86% of the omicron cases sequenced over the past month, according to the organization.
“Among the major omicron descendent lineages, weekly trends show that the relative proportion of BA.2 has increased steadily since the end of 2021, with BA.2 becoming the dominant lineage by week seven of 2022,” WHO wrote in a report released Tuesday.
WHO did qualify the development by noting a significant decline in available sequencing data, meaning they might not have a fully accurate picture of the global situation.
BA.2 is considered more transmissible than the original omicron strain, which was already very contagious to begin with. However, it does not appear to cause more severe cases of COVID-19 or evade vaccines better than the original omicron strain.
BA.2 has been blamed for coronavirus surges in several European countries in recent weeks. WHO reported that it was the second consecutive week that new coronavirus cases increased globally, though reported deaths are continuing to decline.
In the U.S., the subvariant was responsible for nearly 35% of new infections last week. But in areas like the Northeast, it’s responsible for more than half of new cases, according to estimates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
While nationwide coronavirus infections are down, CDC Director Rochelle Walensky said Wednesday that New York and New York City – where BA.2 is the dominant variant – have seen small increases in infections.

Germany and France are both getting hit right now. Maybe they were not that impacted by Omicron during the winter while here in the U.S. we took the brunt of it so we’ve developed herd immunity or at least for the time being anyway. My educated guess.
Are they calling it Stealth Omicron because it’s so mild you don’t even know you have it?

Probably, but all you have to say to some folks is “Covid” and they freak out.
I still can’t believe the number of people I see dutifully wearing the masks OUTSIDE. They walk around their their heads down, i the most defeated, beaten down posture I have seen in a long time.
The UK had daily death counts of about 300 in January. That was Omicron, mostly. This was 1/3 their worst numbers of Jan 2021. Substantially lower than then. But of course Jan 2021 had no vax at all. January this year the UK was heavily vaxed and boosted. So death count reductions expected for them (for brand new vax. A couple of months later and it’s not too useful).
Their current numbers are 290ish dead per day, to B.A.2. Vax is eroding. So is recovery immunity from most of last year. They have been surprised the Omicron uptick hasn’t immunized more. Still getting triple digit deaths per day.
The US won’t see this for another week or two. Our Omicron peak was 3500ish dead per day. All of last year’s vax and recovery immunity is relentlessly getting older, and we only have 40ish% boosts. So it’s hard to suggest this next surge from the UK won’t generate big death counts.
Vax is quickly worthless, but inside those few weeks or months, it has value. Recovered immunity is inferior. I did not realize that until the key study was released:

Over the entire time of the "official" pandemic, the mortality rate for the U.K. is less than one-quarter of one percent. About half that for a single year's rate.
Covid-19 in the U.K. over the entire length of the pandemic has been survived by (100 - 0.242), or 99.76 % of the population. Locked down, injected with experimental mRNA gene therapies and terrorized by media throughout.
For the U.K., it has been a 99.76 % rate of survival. Across the entire pandemic.
No one is being “hit” by anything. The virus is making it’s appointed rounds according to the laws of nature. Increases in infection without much increase in serious outcomes. Don’t you have something else to fearmonger about ?
Natural immunity is vastly superior. If you seriously believe “vax” was the reason for the lower death rates you’re incorrigible. You yourself say it’s almost worthless except for a very short time. Natural immunity may last years or even decades. Omicron creates very little death or serious illness. If you seriously believe the American numbers are of actual Omicron mortality, you’re a mathematical illiterate.
Omicron itself IS a vaccine, a powerful, broad spectrum and long lasting one. You like vaccines fine. You should be pulling for maximum spread of Omicron, as massively, quickly and universally as possible. As I have said since early 2020 - the SPREAD is the SOLUTION.
There are definitely tons of covidiots who have taken it too far but there are some people with prexisting conditions that are still in fear for their lives every time they do have to go outside for necessity.
They may know people with the same condition who died horrifically “with” covid. These people are going to take as few chances as possible to avoid that same fate and yes it may border on irrationality. People in fear of death can be irrational...
