Researchers identify key regulatory mechanism in inflammation (Omega-6 fat linoleic acid goes awry in burns, sepsis, cancer, and COVID-19)

A study has identified a key regulatory mechanism in inflammation that may lead to new targets for resolving that inflammation—and the inflammation of patients with sepsis, cancer and COVID.

The scientists discovered a pathway that regulates the immune response after infection or injury, such as burns. Dysregulation of this pathway could differentiate those who are at risk of fatal sepsis or help identify targets to resolve this unregulated inflammation.

The team found that the metabolites of linoleic acid formed by the enzyme, soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH), drive deleterious inflammation after injury. These metabolites, known as lipid mediators, regulate inflammation, blood pressure and pain. Drugs that inhibit the sEH enzyme and resolve inflammation could lead to a better patient outcome.

…"This dysregulation has fatal consequences in serious diseases such as COVID, cancer, sepsis, burn, where fatality rates can be as high as 40 percent in severe cases," she said.

"The immunological disbalance we see in many cases of severe burn injury, trauma and sepsis pose a huge clinical challenge as we lack the understanding of how to diagnose and treat it," said co-lead author Dr. Christian Bergmann. "With this work, we reveal an important mechanism how immune cells are functionally disabled by sEH-derived metabolites of linoleic acid."

"The natural compounds we are studying in this paper are metabolites of linoleic acid (LA), an essential fatty acid the body needs in very small amounts to survive and is only available through the diet," McReynolds explained. "At lower concentrations, these metabolites are necessary for regulating thermogenesis and heart health but promote inflammation at higher concentrations."

"At higher concentrations, the immune system was unable to properly respond to infection, thereby promoting a sustained immune response."

Discussion of burns and cytokines. I have seen manuka honey work wonders on wounds..no idea on sepsis

This might explain the manuka honey phenomenon with burns and Il 6.

I cook with bacon fat, beef fat, butter, and avocado oil.

I have been trying to increase omega 3 and reduce omega 6 for a long time. I believe the ratio between these is important for health. Oily fish is good, i happen to really enjoy it.

Interestingly almonds have a really terrible ratio on this

Unfortunately our food supply is distorted so far from nature- government subsidies force use of corn syrup, GMO corn and soy into our food, starting with the feed given to animals. Even at local farm level it is nearly impossible to find chicken or beef or pork that isn’t fed corn or soy.

Yeah - and one of the newer the “standards” is to tell folks with no cholesterol problems they need more Statins “just because” - by now one might figure it’s Big Pharm money driving medical “science”...

17.4% of the fat in almonds is Omega-6 fat.

Unfortunately, it has no Omega-3 fat.

Yeah I am for a 1 to 1 ratio of omega 6 to omega 3. That was one of the findings of people in the blue zones. that they had ratios of 1-2 to 1 for omega 3 and omega 6.

Cotton seed oil is not healthy. It is not food. It is a cheap by-product of the textile industry.
I avoid it like the plague.

Before the invention of seed oils for cooking, everybody had a much lower consumption of omega 6 fats.

If you avoid oils high in omega 6 fats such as canada oil and soybean oil, you can eat anything else you want and you will likely consume less omega 6 fats than 99% of the population.
