Chinese Translation Needed
Rebelbase ^ | 3/16/22 | Rebelbase

Cleaning up our father's estate we found a wax paper umbrella he brought back from his time in China and Japan in the months following the surrender. There is some writing on it which I assume is Chinese but am not certain. He spent some shore time in Shanghai and in Sasebo Japan in Oct-Nov, 1945.

Can anyone here translate what this writing means?

She can’t understand several of the words - even though she speaks Shanghainese and Mandarin. It is Chinese Traditional.

May be a little difficult. Can you tell us the ones she does understand please?

I think it’s a Burma Shave rhyme.

It is Chinese, but I believe it is backward.

I can read Japanese and they share many of the same characters.

True dat. 🙂

I couldn't really discern if it was on the inside or outside, but it does look like it is perhaps is on the outside. It may be what is does say, some kind of expression. Hopefully my friend can tell me more when he gets home, as he is out-of-town in Florida at the moment., so the phone screen is too small for him to really look at it with any detail. But he thinks it is Japanese at this point..

It’s hard to tell; and different kinds of Chinese writing are used now than may have been commonly used when and where it was made.

I just know it’s not Korean :-)

I thought at first it was inside, but then the OP seemed to indicate that it was outside.

I’m not sure, but it might help to see a pic of the whole opened thing. These Asian parasols come in different shapes, and there might be different regional styles, too.

Here are some pix I took of it when I opened it last month. It had been stored in heat at some point and was melted shut. Took an hour with a heat gun to get it to open.

Well, I can’t tell anything about the script; but the illustration and border on it look more Japanese to me.

Also, a lot of Chinese ones seem flatter in construction.

If you don’t get an answer, let me know. I can post it on WeChat for some Chinese friends.
