NATO’s role in maintaining security in Europe has never been more critical following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. That includes protecting member nations from climate change, according to new analysis from the German Marshall Fund of the United States.
In the fund’s latest installment of reports called “NATO in a New Era: Global Shifts, Global Challenges,” Jamie Shea, NATO’s former deputy assistant secretary general for emerging security challenges, said member states must not lose sight of security issues that go beyond political and physical borders.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has impacted NATO’s objectives on climate change, but its climate agenda does not have to be incompatible with its military operational priorities,” Shea wrote in the analysis.
The analysis also makes clear that NATO, while making significant steps toward addressing climate risk, remains under pressure to respond to extreme climate conditions and events that undermine operational readiness.
“It has taken some time for the security implications of climate change to find their way onto the NATO agenda,” Shea wrote, noting that alliance has been mired in conventional, cyber and hybrid attacks from the Middle East to Eastern Europe and now, “the implacable rise of China as a global military and technological power.”
Climate security also has tested NATO’s organizational norms, since the alliance is “used to reacting to—not anticipating—crises and to dealing with concrete and imminent challenges.” As such, “climate change may well have seemed difficult to assess.”
Erin Sikorsky, director of the Center for Climate & Security in Washington, said “NATO has been a leader in so far as pushing its members to put it on the agenda” and that allowing the Ukraine crisis to distract from those efforts would be unwise.
“Of course, climate isn’t the primary threat. It’s the interactivity with other types of threats,” Sikorsky said.

I’m so sick of these idiots.
What a bunch of hooey.
Can NATO arrange a coup against mother nature?
It’s a simple concept; control the Sun and you can control the climate here on earth. Anything beyond that is just political thuggery BS.

Still and always, this crap about “climate change” somehow being the singular providence of all human existence is getting old.
There are so many factors, perhaps most of them still unknown or unimagined, that have an impact on overall “climate” of any era of history, that there is not yet a algorithm that could satisfactorily explain the various interactions. Carbon dioxide was seized upon as the “change agent” of climate, but its presence is far too low to be a causative factor by any stretch of the imagination. CO2 is a TRAILING indicator of either warming or cooling, and does not contribute to the process in any way, shape, form or manner.
By far the most active agent in overall temperature fluctuations is - water vapor. And we can no more escape the effects of the cycle of water from solid (ice) to liquid to fumes of steam, than we can escape the effects of life itself. There is something with water called the “triple point”, where H2O can simultaneously exist as a solid, a liquid, and a gaseous compound, at 32 degrees Fahrenheit or 0 degrees Centigrade, under conditions at the earth’s sea level. Carbon dioxide cannot do this under terrestrial surface conditions, as it sublimates directly from solid to a gaseous form under normal atmospheric pressure. Therefore carbon dioxide cannot shift vast quantities of thermal energy in the manner in which water can and does. This shift of thermal energy is what drives global warming and cooling.
The left wants to promote the advance of socialism and radical environmentalism throughout the West. But this war is having the opposite effect. National populations are pushing for greater expenditures on military defense, and becoming more self-sufficient in terms of fossil fuels. That is not a result that the typical deep stater would endorse.
It also is likely to lead to greater suspicion of economic ties with China as well, and a greater push for national self-sufficiency.
Why would NATO?
We going to be stuck in NATO for another 50 years because of Putin’s stupid Ukraine invasion
