Monthly Prepping & Self Sufficiency Thread

Monthly Prepping & Self Sufficiency Thread

I've been meaning to do a prepper thread for a while now and will do my best to start one the first Saturday of each month from here out.

When you start prepping, it's about stocking up on food, water and supplies and maybe having a BOB(Bug Out Bag) and a retreat to bug out to. That leads to moving to that retreat which is usually away from the cities and your retreat likely is larger than the typical city/suburb home lot. In fact, you probably have room to produce some of your needs. Basic prepping leads to living in a more self sufficient way and producing some of your needs. It's a natural progression and as such, I'm calling these threads, Prepping & Self Sufficiency threads.

In preparation for this, I've reworked my profile page and also included a lot of info that freeper Pete from Shawnee Mission has been collecting from past Weekly Gardening threads. Gardening is a part of prepping and self-sufficiency but I'm far from being an expert so be sure to join in the weekly gardening threads. The best way to find past gardening threads seems to be by doing a keyword or tag search for "gardening:. https://freerepublic.com/tag/gardening/index?tab=articles

My neighbor who was born turn of last century, said her family would butcher a pig every yr and it was the nastiest thing to do. But after it was done it was very rewarding.

I can’t image living like that.

Yep.

The one I buy/bought simply lists ‘whole milk’ as the only ingredient.

Hops, yeast and barley. Everything else is a waste of time.

Yes, I have to supplement with selenium and copper regularly. I looked into growing alfalfa - there is a hybrid that is created to grow in my zone, but I cannot just let the goats forage it, they will bloat. So, I would have to harvest and cure it. I’m thinking I will just stock up on the alfalfa pellets.

I’ve been looking at Sam;s but have not seen it. What department is it in? Or what category of foods?

"Most animal feed/food is mainly corn based."

But, the greenies turn it into gasoline to save Gaia...
Thanks for keeping the prepper threads going.

We have NDs - I wanted something easy to handle (small) and great for milking (high butterfat). Not great for meat though, lol

It works very well for us. Never had a goat escape (even our determined buck)

This is what we use: https://www.premier1supplies.com/p/electronet-9-35-12-electric-netting?msclkid=8f9575cc1d6f119e1ca617e0db7cff25&utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=(ROI)%20Smart%20Shopping%20-%20Fencing&utm_term=4583657836388748&utm_content=Ad%20group

My d-i-l who grew up in a well off family in a big city, sees no need for prepping. It’s beyond her comprehension that some day she might have to live on it.

My son was raised well. When he gets back from their vacation, we’re going to do some more pressure canning of beef for stews and soups.

My d-i-l was unloading canning jars on me saying she didn’t want to hang on to them cause it was my *hobby*.

Hobby!

What a mind set.

It reminded me of your tagline. She can think it’s a hobby until she sees the need for it. In the meantime, my son will be all set with those survival skills.

A friend bought a goat to help clear a small plot. He imagined eating it once the job was done, but his girl named it. He wound up chaining it to his outbuilding and the goat head butted the small shed to the ground!

Ok. I stand corrected. I was thinking 2 or 3 strands. I have actually used what you are using when I had 300 Nannie’s brought to the research facility that I manage for brush control for a few short months. I had them shipped in from TX and found out a short time later when kidding started that they were harboring Chlamydia when the kids started dying at birth or prematurely.

The product is expensive but I recall it worked.
