‘Potentially Catasrophic’ – Container Loaded with Discarded Lithium Batteries Catches Fire Enroute to Port
gCaptain ^ | March 10, 2022 | Mike Schuler

The U.S. Coast Guard is warning about the hazards of transporting discarded lithium batteries after a container illegally loaded them caught fire while en route to the Port of Virginia, where it was set to be loaded onto a ship.

Room to improve sensing a ‘bad’ condition before it becomes critical.

Yea just like a nuclear reactor it should scram automatically before it has a melt down.

I expect that a detached garage will be a big a deal as an en suite bath in future home sales.

flood porn on FakeNewsMSM almost 24/7 (breaks for the WAR), yet you never heard the following, even tho Australia has more per capita rooftop solar than virtually any other country, and people were taking refuge on roofs etc:

1 March: Energy Matters Australia: Solar Panels And Floods – Safety Advice
With parts of NSW expecting flooding over the coming days, Fair Trading Minister Anthony Roberts has reminded New South Wales residents whose homes are damaged by storms to take care if their house has a solar power system installed.
“Damage to a roof by debris can interfere with normal solar panel operation,” he said. “There can be electrical hazards with solar panels or Photovoltaic Arrays (PV Arrays), which can generate an electrical current regardless of whether or not the electrical supply from the state grid has been turned off.”...

During flooding events in Australia in January last year, The Clean Energy Council (CEC) produced a basic safety bulletin in regard to solar power systems that can be downloaded here (PDF) (LINK)...
https://www.energymatters.com.au/renewable-news/em3081/

***Sophie (below)b has been shilling for solar & wind for years, but she thinks it’s now time to talk of the dangers of rooftop solar (a danger not only during floods, and a danger to not only home-owners & neighbours, but to firemen and women):

3 March: OneStepOffTheGrid Australia: Rooftop solar systems and floods: How to stay safe and minimise risk
by ***Sophie Vorrath
As floods continue to devastate parts of Queensland and New South Wales, the all-too familiar images of people awaiting rescue on the roofs of their submerged houses increasingly feature solar panels. Which means it’s time to talk about flooding and rooftop solar safety.

Master Electricians Australia issued an urgent warning (LINK) earlier this week along these lines, warning rooftop solar owners that panels continue to produce electricity during a flood event, even if the grid supply to the house has been cut and the panels turned off at the switchboard...
“This is a very serious threat affecting thousands of homes and has the potential to cause death or serious injury if people come into contact with the wiring to the panels...

Queensland regional network operator Ergon Energy offers similar advice on its website, including a warning that a “live” solar system combined with flood water or storm damage can pose a serious electric shock risk...

My wife and I were thinking about selling our farm so we could buy one of these POSes, in the name of the Green Goddess Gaia. Of course we would not have enough to replace the batteries when they burned up in a few months, but as beltway crew says, you should go ahead and do it to save the world..//sarc// We won’t be able to drive the guzzler much longer way out here in the country...

Gee, Greenies where is your recycling program for used lithium batteries? Oh that’s right we just ship them to some poor country in Africa!

There isn’t enough money anywhere, that would entice me to give up my 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee Supercharged HEMI V8, for any EV.

# Does china refurbish them? Extract the lithium to put in the stuff we buy?

Most likely they are paid to dump it in the ocean

A lithium battery fire is almost impossible to put out, and it is entirely invulnerable to all conventional methods, like water, CO2 or Halon, because it's not the type of combustion that involves oxygen. This is lifted directly from their owner's manual for the Tesla S:

...The fire crew should allow the battery to burn itself out, during which it is recommended to apply water spray to neighboring battery enclosures and exposures to further mitigate the spread of the hazards rather than directly onto the burning unit. Applying water directly to the affected enclosure will not stop the thermal runaway event, as the fire will be located behind several layers of steel material, and direct application of water has shown to only delay the eventual combustion of the entire unit....

...WARNING: In confined spaces, if water is used directly on the enclosure that is burning, electrolysis of water (splitting of water into hydrogen and oxygen) may contribute to the flammable gas mixture formed by venting cells, burning plastic, and burning of other combustibles....

... Firefighters should wear self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and fire-protective turnout gear. Cells or batteries may flame or leak potentially hazardous organic vapors if exposed to excessive heat, fire, or overvoltage conditions. These vapors may include volatile organic compounds (VOCs), hydrogen gas, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, soot, and particulates containing oxides of nickel, aluminum, lithium, copper, and cobalt. Additionally, phosphorus pentafluoride, POF3, and HF vapors may form....

A "thermal runaway" is the result of an internal short in the battery but because a lithium-cobalt-oxide fire burns so hot you get the same self-reinforcing reaction once the battery begins to combust, regardless whether there's any electricity flowing.
