An intensive care unit doctor was hit and killed by his own Mercedes while chasing down the carjackers who stole the car.
Dr. Rakesh Patel, 33, of Silver Springs, Maryland, had his car stolen on Vernon Street in the Adams Morgan neighborhood of Washington DC on Tuesday around 8pm.
Patel had left his car running when he got out to give a package to his girlfriend Rachel Lincoln.
As the couple embraced, at least one carjacker jumped inside the doctor's car and sped off.
Patel ran after them but was run over by the thief when he caught up with them on the corner of Florida Avenue and 18th Street, a busy intersection surrounded by row houses and shops and is home to a diverse community. The Adams Morgan community is known for its nightlife and international dining on 18th Street - where Patel was hit - and having cheaper rent than other parts of the DC area. Despite it's lower rent, the area is consider one of the oldest and nicest neighborhoods in Washington DC.
He was pronounced dead shortly after being taken to a nearby hospital.
Lincoln described the moment as 'a nightmare,' as she witnessed her boyfriend's final moments, and now his family is left grieving over the senseless killing.
'[He died] for what? A car?' his mother Charulatta Patel told NBC Washington. 'I always used to call him my baby.'

MedStar also said it was 'heartbroken to learn of the sudden passing' of Patel and that he was completing a residency fellowship in infectious diseases and critical care.
'Dr. Patel will be greatly missed,' MedStar Washington wrote on Twitter.
Patel was in DC on a critical care fellowship at MedStar Washington Hospital Center.

LOL. My friend bought a condo there back in 1990. He chose Adams Morgan because it was all he could afford. I think it cost $60K. We all thought - seriously? Don’t expect us to visit regularly.
But he has rented it continuously, and sold it in late 2019 for $700K.
“...Patel ran after them but was run over by the thief when he caught up with them..”
That cat was fast!
It became a fashionable, trendy neighborhood for a period. I don’t know if it still is. I never go into the city anymore.
Adams Morgan is so convenient: grab your half a pound of free pot from the head shop, then jack the nearest car for the ride back home in SE.
The cuisine is really good. Now we have lots of restaurants in the area.
Reminds me of line from Beverly Hills Cop I: Murphy asks friend the car she is driving is hers (Mercedes). She says no they just take whatever car is available in Beverly Hills.
This is where we have come to. In a fair world, he would have whipped out his Sig and popped a few rounds into the head of the SOB robber and fixed his car from damage. Today, if he did that, he be facing the electric chair, still have to fix his car, and also be sued by the estate of the robber.
That’s just nasty!
Have you eaten it? The stews are very good; but mostly spicy. All of it goes very well with the spongy, sour teff bread.
In some ways it’s like a lot of Indian food. They also make a sambusa (sort of a stuffed dumpling) that’s very similar to Indian samosas.
No, I haven’t tried it. I don’t think I’d be able to bring it to my mouth. What is it? Does it have ingredients which might be palatable in some other form?
Siga Wot - a thick, spicy beef stew - can be compared somewhat to Texas no-bean chili. They make other ‘wots’ from chicken.
And they have bean or lentil things that are a little like Indian dal.
A major seasoning is Berbere spice - very spicy, so you have to use it judiciously, to start:

There are lots of restaurants around now, and Ethiopians in my experience are very friendly and glad to introduce you to the food and make suggestions. Try something sometime.
(But if you’re mainly meat-and-potatoes American, it may be too flavorful and different for you.)
Don't even go to Adams Morgan without packing.
I used to like a lot of the ethnic restaurants there. We’d go in the 90s whenever I visited family in the DC area. When my BFF was still single, she had a neat little condo in NW near the embassies and the zoo.
We’d often go to Adams Morgan to eat at some of the restaurants. A favorite of mine was Straits of Malaya, which is probably long gone now.
R.I.P., Dr. Patel.
We had a friend who had a condo on Conn. avenue, very near the zoo.
There was a great British-cuisine restaurant near there, run by a couple of German ladies (???). Probably long gone, now, too.
(The Ethiopian restaurant, Meskerem, that had been in Adams Morgan for decades, closed, too some years ago.)
MD 'Freak State' Ping!
Let me know if you want on/off this list.....
(Ok, MD pet peeve accuracy NAZI…
…It’s Silver SPRING, singular, not plural. Why does everyone have to pluralize every “Spring” name”?)
I may be suffering from ‘Mandela Effect’, but I distinctly remember from childhood that PG county was called ‘Prince George County’, not ‘Prince George’s County’. I haven’t found any proof to back up the ‘memory’, though.
Possessive names for these counties seem common in Maryland, while Virginia calls their counties ‘Prince George’, ‘Prince Edward’, ‘Prince William’.
I’ve lived here all my life, and it has ALWAYS been possessive, Prince George’s.
You’re thinking of Virginia.
