The Boston accent was ranked as the most annoying in the U.S., according to a new survey, but it also ranked among the top 10 smartest and sexiest.
Preply, a Brookline-based online language learning platform, took a survey of more than 1,700 people across the country on the most loved and hated accents. The Boston accent came out on top as the most annoying, followed by the Midwestern accent.
When it comes to the sexiest accent, Boston ranked number six out of 10. The top spot was taken by the southern accent.
Boston also came in sixth place for the most trustworthy accent. The Midwestern accent took the number one spot for trustworthiness.
Bostonians scored higher for sounding smart, coming in at number four, with the New York accent taking the top spot.
"Bal-mer"? Yeah it's pretty annoying. Once I was in a training course and the Baltimorean kept pronouncing "ambulance" as "AM-blanse".
I've heard people from Baston refer to the filthy air we often have out here as smag.
What is most annoying to me is a non-Southerner trying to sound Southern. Hillary Clinton and her ‘no waze tard’, for example. Even Barry O sounded fake when he attempted.
A sample size of 1700? Good grief.
That’s why I find the Aussie accent so annoying. They end every freaking sentence with that up tone.
In the section called “life in these United States” in reader’s digest a woman wrote in about another woman she just met who was from Boston. The Boston woman asked her if she had ‘PS/DS’. What the heck is that, the woman asked. Boston lady grabs her earlobe and says, “you know, PS DS!”
The Boston accent comes across as liberal ‘elite’, phony and full of itself. It’s offensive because the people behind it are offensive.
Is that you Cliff?
That reminds me of Rush doing Ballsy-Ford’s upspeak. Hilarious.
Don Imus used to have a guy who did a pretty good impression of Richard Nixon except he always pronounced “Cuba” as “Cuber.” I never understood that. Nixon was from Yorba Linda, not Boston.
Bang a You’eee. Make a U-Turn
Tonic. Any carbonated soda, Coke, Pepsi, Orangeade, Root Beer
Wicked Pissa. Very cool, extraordinary, outstanding
Dunkys. Coffee Shop, usually Dunkin Donuts
Drove the Cah on the Gahden State Pahkway. Took a trip south
Chowdah. Rich milky soup with potatoes, seafood or corn
Right on Red. Straight ahead on red
Senatahs. Assholes
It gets worse.
And up-speak. Ugh! 🙄
The definitive movie re “Bahstin” accents would be The Departed (aka, The DePAHtid)
That's largely true, but regional accents are complicated. A lot of rich society people in New York have a bit of a New York accent. It's not Brooklynese or Longuylandese, but it's noticeable. Something similar used to be true in Boston not too long ago as well. It wasn't what you heard in the streets, but it may have been distinctive.
In Southern California, “caught” is pronounced the same as “cot”; “Mary” and “marry” rhyme with “merry,” “end” rhymes with “pinned,” “any” and “many” rhyme with “Winnie,” “anti-” is usually pronounced “ant eye,” and Lancaster, Calif. is pronounced “Lan-caster” and not “Lankster” as it is in other states.
Mississippi country accent.
Y’all, it hot in dis here room!
Well, ya’ might could cut de air on.
Sorry, guys. Just be grateful Freerepublic is in writing, haha.
I have a pretty deep Boston accent....
same here. I’ve been told by daughters boyfriend that my accent is North Shore accent which is different. I’ll take his word for it.
WTF? Midwesterners don't have accents. We define what is standard English.
I’m so sick of hearing the Valley girl and the standard reporter voice that I’d prefer anything else.
