The Boston accent was ranked as the most annoying in the U.S., according to a new survey, but it also ranked among the top 10 smartest and sexiest.
Preply, a Brookline-based online language learning platform, took a survey of more than 1,700 people across the country on the most loved and hated accents. The Boston accent came out on top as the most annoying, followed by the Midwestern accent.
When it comes to the sexiest accent, Boston ranked number six out of 10. The top spot was taken by the southern accent.
Boston also came in sixth place for the most trustworthy accent. The Midwestern accent took the number one spot for trustworthiness.
Bostonians scored higher for sounding smart, coming in at number four, with the New York accent taking the top spot.
I rarely very rarely submit to such things, but I did that one.
That was absolutely cool. Totally nailed it regarding me.
Mainiac is delightsome. I dare say cunnin.
Bill-ricka.
Agree.
Also gripes me when someone says Texas is in the Southwest.
Why are some States considered to be in the Midwest when they are East of the big MS River? They are not in the Middle of the Country; much less in the middle of the West!
Do were his older brothers’.
Only those trying to mimic the Jersey accent say “Joisey”.
Just funnin’....I really enjoyed the family I met.
So, perhaps you can answer a question or two.
Why is the “r” ignored on words that end in the letter?
Why is an “r” added to words that end in “a”?
I remember Jack Kennedy and “Cuber”
... not “Lankster” as it is in other states.

Not in TX. It’s a 3-syllable word.
There’s a town in NC named Leicester. It pronounced Lester.
Pok the Cah at the curb and wok ta hovod yod!!
Everything about Boston is annoying, with the accent being a highlight of annoyingness. Wicked annoying.
People from New Jersey don’t have an accent. All other people have a “not from Jersey” accent.
“Why is the “r” ignored on words that end in the letter? “
It’s a dialect. It’s just how we learned to pronounce words. Boston for whatever reason maintained speaking like the British. Think the Beatles song Lovely Rita. Meter is pronounced metah.
“Why is an “r” added to words that end in “a”? “
I don’t think I do this.
My least favorite is college attended southern girls who work to hide their lovely southern accent and instead sound like valley girls
All sound the same
Usually driving the Prius while sock hat hipster boyfriend plays games on his phone on the way to Trader Joes
The rule of thumb for Southern accents is that when you get to a vowel, pronounce all the vowels. Sometimes they vary in order, is all.
My mom was raised in Norfolk, VA. She retained her southern accent until she passed at age 83.
My dad was in the Navy, so we moved every 2 years until I was 13. One of our locations was Federal Way, WA. Lots of Canadian influence there. Roll forward to 1992. I was at SHAPE and visiting the "bunker". There were a couple RAF enlisted guys at the front desk. One of the remarked that he was trying to figure out the origin of the Canadian vowels in my speech. Federal Way, WA. He had some good pointers for me before I made my first trip to Wales. It was a drive from Mons, BE to Calais, FR. Ferry to Dover. Sleep overnight, then rent a car at Kennings and drive all the way to Aberystwyth. Quite the baptism by fire driving a manual shift car, sitting on the right, driving on the left. Even more fun was seeing the first road signs in both English and Welsh.
That brings me to Welsh. It's phonetic and you pronounce every vowel. There are some vowel pairs with specific pronunciation, but when intended to be pronounced individually, the first vowel is marked with a diaresis (umlaut for German speakers). Vowels are aeiouwy and a corresponding version with a caret over the top of vowel. It is very simple compared to Irish or Scot's Gaelic.
