The Boston accent was ranked as the most annoying in the U.S., according to a new survey, but it also ranked among the top 10 smartest and sexiest.

Preply, a Brookline-based online language learning platform, took a survey of more than 1,700 people across the country on the most loved and hated accents. The Boston accent came out on top as the most annoying, followed by the Midwestern accent.

When it comes to the sexiest accent, Boston ranked number six out of 10. The top spot was taken by the southern accent.

Boston also came in sixth place for the most trustworthy accent. The Midwestern accent took the number one spot for trustworthiness.

Bostonians scored higher for sounding smart, coming in at number four, with the New York accent taking the top spot.

“same here. I’ve been told by daughters boyfriend that my accent is North Shore accent which is different. I’ll take his word for it.”

I was at work once and somebody asked me if I was from England. I said no, I’m from Dorchester.

Peabody = PeeBeeDee as fast as possible.

Everything is MASS due to not being able to spell their own state.

Discovered this quickly at a print shop to order business cards.

No no no. The vocal fry is the most annoying.

It means you’re so bored with life you can’t be bothered to use your vocal cords for the end of the sentence.

Do not ever endanger your life by telling an Australian you hear a Canadian accent.

There’s a story that JFK was campaigning in the midwest, delivering a stump speech in which he asked rhetorically, what is the problem with the agriculture industry.
Some wit in the crowd shouted out “the fah-muhs are staah-ving!”. It cracked JFK up.

The old Boston Brahman accent was yes, related in its soft-to-nonexistent “Rs”, but still quite different from the current stereotype.

And yes, wealthy NYC locals often have a faint version of the stereotypical accent from the boroughs.

Most Annoying..
1 Boston, where they bite off sentences and swallow words whole.

2 tie New York city, because the whole damned city is arrogant and annoying.

2 tie Any other city in NYS

3 Chicago, whiney and nasally nails it. And God hates them for their excuse for pizza.

Buffalo/Rochester aren’t all that bad until you hear them pronounce “Hockey” as “Hackey”. :P

I was building voice recognition driven applications between 2001 and 2003. I had a Windows machine with an Intel telephone board. My recognition library was provided by Conversay in Oregon. Incoming speech was digitized on the board inbound and the stream fed to the voice recognition engine. The engine emitted recognition events that triggered actions.

The voice recognition engine was "tuned" for a midwest American accent. Inside the system, I had built end to end routing directions for a driver that could be emitted in English or Italian. To navigate the list, the user could say Forward, Back, Repeat and the routing instruction was fed to the voice synthesizer. It was door to door navigation driven completely by voice commands. Adequate for 2003.

The system checked out perfectly in the lab. The fun started when we asked a lady in Boston to take it for a test drive. Fah Wood. Fah Wood. Nothing. As bad as the voice driven elevator in Scotland. A midwest accent speaker tried. Forward. It worked fine. Next stumble, the Swedish staff member. Farrr Varrrd. Farrr Varrrd. Again, no joy. I was disappointed, but no more so than the Japanese engineers that visited the Wingcast site in 2001. The Nuance engine used by the Ford engineers worked well with midwest accent, but failed completed with a strong Japanese accent.

I had a personal experience when visiting my grandparents in Phoenix. I went out to the shuffleboard area at the hotel. A middle age man addressed me. I didn't understand. I tried German and Spanish. He asked if I didn't understand English in a very thick Brooklyn accent. I immediately "tuned" my own recognition to deal with that. At 13, I didn't have a breadth of exposure that I do at 65.

“DePAHtid is correct, since ar is pronounced ah. But we don’t turn o’s into ah’s. They get that wrong.”

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Might that depend on which “paht” of Boston one is from? The movie made a point of whether characters were from South Boston (”Southies”).
