Casualty total so far of a few thousand don’t indicate that there is any heavy fighting. They have a way to go to match Bosnia or Chechen 2 with on the order of 50,000 killed total for each war. Commentators moaning about how this is the worst war in Europe since WW II seem to have forgotten those wars.
However, the Russians also seem to have forgotten everything they learned in Grozny.
Russian “special” forces are not that special. And this was a reconnaissance team.

Listening to some of the recordings of Ukrainian troops reminds me that the biggest inaccuracy in every John Wayne and Burt Lancaster war movie is that for real soldiers every second word is a curse word.

The funny thing is the Ukrainians are berating the Russian soldiers (dead or alive) as “bitches”.
If the Russian soldiers are alive, the Ukrainians are calling them bitches right to their face.
If the Russians are dead, they’re calling them bitches while looking at their bodies and telling them you should have stayed home in Russia.
The term “bitches” has a very different meaning from
what we are used to here in the west.
This is modern day, distributed warfare. Gone are the days of massed forces. Massed forces are just juicy targets for long range weapons.

That’s typical of the press every day is Groundhog Day (the Bill Murray movie!). They forget what they had for breakfast. All they know is stand in front of the camera look good & read what’s presented to them. The print media are just too lazy to do any research ( or maybe its edited out!).
I still think modern warfare (even the cyberwar part!) requires competent planning, competent execution with competently trained forces.
According to all the reports I’m seeing in the Western press, the Russians are being absolutely crushed.
I think they are half-heartedly fighting...
They don’t wanna be there no more than the man in the moon.
I’m surprised they went for Kiev. I doubt they will take Lviv. It is likely to be too costly to take and hold the old Austro-Hungarian provinces around Lemberg.
I thought that the Russians would slice off the part east of a line southwest from Karkiv to the Dneiper and then west to the Moldavia border. That’s a lot for the size of their forces and it would achieve the objective of destroying the Ukrainian forces on the line of contact with Donetsk and Lughansk.
Did they arrive on short busses?
