Weekly Garden Thread - Feb 26-March 4, 2022 [Grow a Tea Garden Edition]
February 26, 2022 | Diana in WI/Greeneyes in Memorium

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

At the least, I’ll be growing a small variety of cabbage (Golden Acre) and iceberg lettuce.

The cabbage still gets to an impressive size.

I did not container garden it though.

Yeah I grew it in the ground before but want to make better use of space by expanding onto a patio.

Greetings from southern New Hampshire, where I have dug out from a significant dump of snow, yesterday. We got close to 8” of snow and during a break, yesterday afternoon, I was able to shovel our long driveway. This morning, there is maybe a 1/2” of fresh snow on it…very drive-able.

Warm snap leading up to this storm allowed me to get a head start on my spring cleaning projects. I was able to pick up some 2x4 frames for cheap, last Autumn and I disassembled them and have some 76 8’ ones, neatly stacked for spring. I need to pull the screws out of the 4’ ones and stack them. I also moved one of our John Deere 318s away from the back drive

It is kind of a bummer, looking at all of the snow, but the water table will love it.

Seed acquisition is in progress. I am going to try growing pickling cucumbers and making pickles, this coming season. Actually, I want to grow regular cucumbers so that I can make my Grandma Schulz’s cucumber and onion salad, this summer. It is a great summer salad and brings back wonderful memories.

Have faith, spring is coming!

Does anyone have experience growing turmeric with which one can make ‘golden tea?’ I’ve not tried it yet (maybe this year) but unless you are in zone 8 or warmer iirc it must be brought in during the colder weather.

We have the same combo.
Light snow, covered by sleet.

WE had “thunder sleet” a few days ago...

and I’ll be sick of the rain soon and then sick of the heat and the ticks and chiggers after that.

$33.50 Germination Kit (Heat Mat, 72 cell tray, bottom tray, 2” vented dome)
$24.00 Heat Mat Temp Controller (used)
$20.00 Grow Light
$77.50 TOTAL (I was at $100)

I like the 2 inch lid better than the 7 inch for strictly germinating seeds.

I’ve got an NVIDIA Shield TV Pro that doesn’t work that I’m selling on ebay and it’s up to $84 with 3 days to go. I’ve seen non working units go for $200 which is what we paid for it new. Inflation is occasionally a good thing. LOL

I’m going to go ahead and buy one seed starting setup for now and see what the Shield goes for. It will probably pay for a second setup plus assortment of trays. Not bad for something that hasn’t been used in a few years because it’s broken. It won’t boot up. Gets stuck at Android animation. Probably an easy fix for someone that’s into that stuff. I can’t be bothered to learn because I hate android/google anyway. An old laptop running Linux with Kodi and a web browser is working fine as a TV streaming box since all I do is free streaming. I’ll replace it with a single board computer like the Raspberry Pi at some point.

I would LOVE one of those.

Perhaps I could suggest it for a summer project. :)

I’m tired of Winter now, too. I can handle it somewhat in December, January, and early February, but by the end of February I’m ready to see signs of Spring that I know are still 6 weeks (or more) away.

Sometimes I think I want to move back to the South, but then when I visit, I miss my beautiful slice of Heaven in central Indiana. Not sure if I will ever do anything but visit the South again. I love the change of seasons, though. Is there a perfect place to live, where you only have snow from November to early February? Sure would be nice to see crocuses and daffodils peeking out soon instead of in a month or more.

These look really good. Not real cheap and they're hybrids so no seed saving but look yummy.

https://www.johnnyseeds.com/vegetables/lettuce/salanova-lettuce/

$7 + $6 shipping for 25 seeds for the collection in pic(50 cents a seed) I suppose you could order some other packets of seeds without shipping increase; https://www.johnnyseeds.com/vegetables/lettuce/salanova-lettuce/salanova-home-garden-mix-pelleted-lettuce-seed-3060JP.html?cgid=salanova-lettuce

Second packet makes shipping $7.50 and it stays until you get to 5 packets at which point it goes to $11.00

I’ve had good luck with those clear party drink cups. They come in all sizes. It’s easy to tell when they need watering too.

I never thought of it before, but it would be easy to make vent hats from some ziploc plastic bags.

Only if you have a green house.

Even my yaupon holly, planted against a south facing wall, need to be covered and heavily mulched to survive.

Because the wall they are planted against is part of a heated building they grow but need great care.

Yes, I grow it regularly. Central/east Texas. It freezes back in the winter but so far comes back. Beautiful plant too.

I save coffee creamer and coffee containers but I wouldn’t mind trying a little market gardening so I figured I’d get some standard/commercial stuff. I also like mixed baby greens salads and it takes a lot of baby plants to make lots of salads. I’m sure I’ll use saved containers for re-potting in something bigger.
