BRENTWOOD, Calif. - WARNING: Viewer discretion advised. This story has disturbing visual elements.
A woman had her scalp torn off by a Brentwood police dog after she shoplifted thousands of dollars from a nearby mall, video obtained by KTVU shows, raising serious questions about when and why K-9 units are deployed.
Talmika Bates, then 24, is seen in the video provided by her lawyers screaming and wailing in pain. The skin on top of her head was ripped off exposing blood and bone.
"Help me! The dog is biting me," she screams. "My whole brain is bleeding!"
The police officer in the video responds: "We're going to help you…but you shouldn't run from the police."
Bates talked about her painful recovery in an interview with KTVU on Wednesday.
"I really thought I was going to die," she said. "I really didn’t think that I was going to be able to tell this story and really explain to noboody. It’s just traumatizing. It's just sad."
She said she was taken directly to jail after doctors sewed her scalp back on at John Muir hospital in Walnut Creek. She said her hair still doesn't grow around her wounds.
"I feel ugly," she said. "I get miserable I get depressed. I'm not happy with myself. I don’t even feel cute."

Since when is theft punishable by being scalped?
I really doubt the dog has mange.
*ouch* well played.
Posting this FOUR TIMES shows that YOU are out of control. I guess you'll have to put yourself down.
1) The dog shouldn’t be biting head and face.
2) The dog did not respond to the officer’s commands to let go and return to his side. He had to pull the dog off.
3) The officer claims he was delayed in pulling the dog off because he had no cover officer, but that cover officer was there, his body cam filmed the incident.
This badly trained dog is still working.
The lawsuit also claims that the officer did not warn the suspect that he was going to set the dog on her, as required by law.
So sorry that thief was hurt. Damn let’s start a fund for her monument. Can’t understand that not obeying a LAWFUL ORDER brings consequences. If the stupid crook got hurt, tough!
Here’s another point. This woman appears to be the subject of an outsized dose of schadenfreude from many quarters, bearing the weight of many as a result of the fact that many who commit similar and worse crimes get away with them, or face a slap on the wrist, as a direct of policies put in place by bleeding hearts such as yourself who automatically take the side of the criminal element.
She survived, she was treated, both by the cops and by medical personnel. She has some scars and I don’t wish her any physical harm beyond what she’s already contended with. But I’m not tripping over myself to feel an iota of sympathy either.
Damn racist dog.
Uh, yeah. Was this a trick question???
The process by which the suspect was brought into custody was not lawful...as the PD, the city, and the taxpayers are about to find out. Again... since when is it legal to scalp someone as punishment for theft?
None of what the suspect did justified what happened to her. And just because I have that opinion does not in anyway mean that I don’t take her criminal conduct seriously. Both points are mutually exclusive and non conflicting.
Poor dog is gonna need a whole slab of bacon, 3 mcdonalds vanilla cones and about a half gallon of water to get the grease/ taste out of his mouth.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Or lick his own ass for a couple of hours.
I don’t take any joy in this.
But neither do I feel an ounce of sympathy for the criminal, nor any condemnation for the police officer or the dog.
If she had been engaged in gainful activity, or minding her own business and living within her means instead of willfully and gleefully breaking the law and taking the food from the mouth of another person, the odds against her having a police dog jump on her and rip her scalp are pretty small.
If you don’t jump out of a plane, your parachute will probably never fail to open and leave you maimed or killed when you hit the ground.
If you don’t climb Mount Everest, you are less likely find yourself stuck in a blizzard near the summit with no hope of rescue, and will turn to a block of ice.
If you don’t rob people of their possessions, you are less prone to being pursued, captured, injured in the process, and deprived of your freedom.
In a just world, the criminal would own this and a society would condemn her.
But we don’t live in a just world.
Instead, she will get rich, the policeman will lose his job, and the dog will be euthanized.
If what you say is true, that puts a different light on things, but ONLY if all your points are actually true.
Yeah. She’s going to need one.
Gotta hurt.
Wonder if the dog is going to lick his butt to get rid of the taste😁
She just won the lottery.
