Ketogenic Diet for Obese COVID-19 Patients: Is Respiratory Disease a Contraindication? A Narrative Review of the Literature on Ketogenic Diet and Respiratory Function
Frontiers in Nutrition ^ | 2021 Dec 9 | Elena Gangitano et al

Posted on 02/20/2022 4:02:35 PM PST by tired&retired

Data obtained in respiratory patients, mainly lean, are indicative of the safety of low-carbohydrate high-fat diets in respiratory compromised patients, and some beneficial effects on respiratory parameters were recorded.

Keto Diet administration may be helpful for obese patients with chronic hypercapnia, thanks to the reduced CO2 production induced by the diet. Many respiratory patients are malnourished, and obese patients themselves are frequently sarcopenic, therefore an adequate protein supplementation is mandatory, since malnutrition may worsen the general prognosis.

Many supplements for malnourished patients are rich in carbohydrates, and this is detrimental for their respiratory function,....

Keto Diet has anti-inflammatory effects and may reduce the risk of cytokine storm, thanks to the anti-inflammatory effects of ketone bodies, and may have a direct anti-viral effect. Therefore, ketogenic diet may be an effective adjuvant therapy in obese non-critically ill COVID-19 patients, and may even be considered in respiratory lean patients.

New focused clinical trials with adequate sample sizes, led by a multidisciplinary experienced team of pneumologists, endocrinologists and nutritionists, are needed to confirm the safety and the beneficial effects on ventilatory parameters of such approach in respiratory patients.

Excellent! It’s a lifestyle, not a diet, right? I ain’t ever going back.

Even when I slip (holidays, etc), I know I can get right back “on the wagon”, and the excess weight disappears almost as quickly as I put it on.

Sometimes it takes a while to work, so I’m told.

I don’t know what you mean by “weird” metabolism, but from what I understand, there are very few profiles for whom a ketogenic diet won’t work or shouldn’t be tried.

Good luck, and I will pray for you.

Keto for anything but a regimen is toxic. Anyone believing otherwise without educating themselves is...well, I have a word for it.

Please add me to your ping list. I lost 30 lbs on the KETO diet about 4 years ago. Have slipped back into the carb life over the last couple of years, and I need to get back to it!

Thanks!

I don’t know what you mean by “weird” metabolism, but from what I understand, there are very few profiles for whom a ketogenic diet won’t work or shouldn’t be tried.

My metabolism is so efficient that, when I wasn't on the keto diet, I had to keep my calorie intake below 1000/day or I'd gain weight. Add to that the fact that my body doesn't produce some of the hormones and other substances necessary to burn fat the normal way. I'm hoping ketosis is a different enough process to bypass the missing parts of the process.

My doctor has pretty much told me that it's not biologically possible for me to lose weight through diet and exercise, and that the best I can hope for is to slow the rate of gain. But, back in October I had gallbladder trouble and had to go on a ridiculously restricted diet for a while, and lost a few pounds that way. I'm hoping to find a diet that will work as well, but without the maddening feeling of constant hunger.

What brand are the cookies? Or do you have a recipe? To me, stevia has a bitter taste.

Most sleep apnea sufferers would probably also benefit greatly from some serious weight loss.

I lived on that type food as a hillbilly when I was young and thin as a rail. That with road kill stew.

Then I became civilized and got fat!

I was discussing this diet with someone I’ve known for years recently because I knew they had been on it for a long time with good results. However the person told me that their doctor had convinced them to come off the diet, after the person developed prostate cancer that ultimately required surgery.

The doctor, who is considered top notch and works for a major medical clinic, said overabundance of protein could cause that. I have no idea but it was interesting, especially since my diet is high in protein already, but my PSA has been historically low (but slowly rising).

Increase protein, cut carbs AND fat. Check out Dr. Ted Naiman’s PE diet. To lose fat, eat more grams of protein than grams of carbs plus grams of fat. Carbs and fat are energy (E), and protein is P.
