GMC Hummer EV's Weight Shows GM Completely Missed the Point With EVs

The massive electric pickup truck made some headlines these days because of its enormous weight. It already had raised concerns from safety specialists frightened with what a 9,063 pounds (4,103 kilograms) accelerating from 0 to 60 mph (97 kph) in 3 seconds could represent in traffic.

The battery pack alone weighs 2,923 lb (1,326 kg). It has a usable capacity of 212.7 kWh. Car and Driver calculated its gross capacity, and that’s 246.8 kWh. We have already mentioned it weighs as much as compact cars such as the Toyota Corolla ...

... The Rivian R1T achieves a 70 MPGe rating, which is 49% superior to what the GMC EV presents.

Quite a story.

A bazillion city dwellers drive less than 100 miles a week.

The problem is most lack a garage to slow down the copper cable thieves...Most houses in my area have three cars.
Commuter car, kids car and a Sunday going to meeting car...

Two of them will go EV.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) estimates that electricity transmission and distribution (T&D) losses equaled about 5% of the electricity transmitted and distributed in the United States in 2016 through 2020.

When you go to AutoZone for a new battery will the guy behind the counter install it for free?”

Perfect!

My neighbor’s new ICE car caught fire in his garage, he was mowing the lawn... house and garage fully involved before the locals ( I can see the first house from my house) arrived.

From a different context, but works here.

We’re not talking about the same thing. I wasn’t meaning to compare the entire fuel cycle in terms of efficiency, but only how the greater efficiency of an electric motor means you can’t directly the energy content of a tank of gas with a battery charge.

“You have to allow for the vastly greater efficiency of an electric motor compared to ICE. Most of your liquid fuel turns into waste heat, but the vast majority of your battery charge turns into go.”

What about the heat generated to produce the electricity stored in the electric vehicle’s battery?

How about waiting until the technology is is viable instead of pissing your money away so you can brag about being woke? You can’t legislate technology. When you can charge as quickly as filling a gas tank, let me know.

Why are almost all the billionaires leftists? It’s because they have an optimistic view of technology changing the planet.

Uh, no Beavis. Leftists are corrupt hypocrites with no moral compass who excel at acting like they are righteous.

A lot of them are wealthy because they aren't limited by honesty or integrity. Read the history of Bill Gates, it is a history of swindles, backstabbing, fraud, and other associated antisocial and immoral behavior. And Gates is not unique.

But that is different than the mindless rubes who buy a promising technology far too early without any understanding of the cost of early adoption. Buying Tesla stock is not the same thing as buying a Tesla.

Missing the point?

Here’s the point: EVs are about the environment the same way mandatory CoupFlu vaxxes are about public health.

I wonder what the cost to replace the battery would be.

We are going to have 200,000,000 people plug their new 2030 electric vehicles into our 1930 electric grid every night at 6pm.

Do you really believe that our elite have spent any money on grid upgrade in the last 10 years, 20, 50? Upgrades, not maintenance.

I can remember that On August 14, 2003, a series of faults caused by tree branches touching power lines in Ohio, which were then complicated by human error, software issues, and equipment failures, led to the most widespread blackout in North American history.

Beyond a more robust tree trimming schedule, little more was done.

What's the likelihood that the infrastructure bill will be used for any infrastructure?

What if you don’t have a garage?

What if you park in the street because there is no off street parking?

Are we to expect that apartment dwellers are somehow going to run extension cords out of their 5th floor walk-up in Brooklyn or the warehouse loft in Pittsburgh’s Lawrenceville neighborhood?

Electric cars are not now, nor will they be viable alternatives for most consumers until they are able to cleanly & safely manufacture & dispose of a battery that will give enough power to propel a car more than 350 miles on a single charge in both 20 degree weather with the heater cranked or 90 deg weather with the AC cranked Plus recharge in 15 minutes or less at a recharge station 350 miles in any direction from home.

That battery technology doesn’t exist & there is no guarantee it will ever exist.

Until that technology exists & the infrastructure is built out, the EV market will remain a small percentage of the entire new car market. Especially since a viable technology to replace 100% gas vehicles is already available in Hybrid Electric vehicles.

The EV market was killed over 100 years ago because the gasoline vehicle was too convenient to compete against.

You can believe that if it makes you feel better.
That is your prerogative but does not make it so.

“That battery technology doesn’t exist & there is no guarantee it will ever exist.”

I remember reading a technical paper maybe 20 years ago that reviewed the chemistry and physics of many battery technologies and materials and concluded that they will never exist. There are too many fundamental chemical limits to all materials.

And the science said we should all lockdown to flatten the curve...and have two vaccinations plus many boosters...
