“Better than a sharp stick in the eye” is a useful adage. “I had to wrestle a frozen turd away from my beagle, but it’s better than a sharp stick in the eye,” you might say. “My breakfast burrito tastes disconcertingly gamey, but it’s better than a sharp stick in the eye,” you might also say. You know what’s worse than a sharp stick in the eye? A splash of jalapeño in the eye, that’s what. Even tiny amounts of spicy foods can cause blinding eye pain and injury. Fortunately, there are a few tactics you can try to ease the burn.

I tend to think jalapeño in the eye is worse than a sharp stick.

I have found that whenever you get something in your eyes is to don’t do anything. Just close your eyes and let the natural process take hold. Unless it’s a bullet your eyes will flush it out.

I always carry milk when I am near a protest.

A sharp, hard rap on one of your toes with a roofing hammer helps a lot in distracting from spiced-eye pain.

Or so I’m told.

having had 32 bits of steel removed from my eyes, I disagree.

they had to grind the rust rings out of my cornea.

“Flush your eye with milk
If you’re fond of downing spicy foods, you know that a glass of milk can immediately ease the burn in your mouth. That’s because capsaicin is a fat-soluble compound; in other words, it gets broken down by dairy. If you get a spicy something in your eye—be it white-hot serrano juice or savory barbecue chip crumbs—plain cow’s milk is your best friend here.”

I have been carefully splashing greater and greater amounts of jalapenos in my eyes over the years and have developed an immunity to jalapeno juice. Ha ha ha!

Got sriracha in my eye once, just as we were leaving a restaurant. Must have been a drop on my finger and I rubbed it into my eye in the car. Felt like a blowtorch went off in my eye.

First I ripped out my contact and flicked it into space. Then I howled at my husband to get me somewhere with water. Ended up at a big book store and stumbled into the bathroom with one hand over my eye and the other out like I was heading for the endzone.

After practically wedging my face under a faucet and sufficiently flushing my eye, I stood up looking for paper towels and of course there were none. The hand dryer wasn’t very powerful so I used a baseball mitt-sized wad or two of cheap, thin toilet paper to dab off my face. Walked out with little crumpets of that toilet paper all in my soaked hair and face but the burn was gone.

I hate it when that kind of stuff happens. You know, a melting eyeball in public.
