Shutting down after 12 Centuries

Survived the Black Death but couldn’t outlast Boris Johnson

The current operator of the pub in St. Albans announced on Friday that they have filed for bankruptcy, blaming “a sustained period of extremely challenging trading conditions” — a similar refrain to a number of historic British pubs that have closed during the pandemic.

“Along with my team, I have tried everything to keep the pub going. However, the past two years have been unprecedented for the hospitality industry, and have defeated all of us who have been trying our hardest to ensure this multi-award-winning pub could continue trading into the future,” Christo Tofalli, who ran the pub, said in a Facebook post. “It goes without saying I am heartbroken: this pub has been so much more than just a business to me, and I feel honored to have played even a small part in its history.”

The Ye Olde Fighting Cocks in St Albans, which poured its first drink in 793, has run into financial difficulties as a direct result of the pandemic. A sad sad day for British heritage and our Hospitality sector

Midsomer Murders is a really, really good show...it is hard to figure out who the guilty party is because of the little side stories going on...

Thanks, I didn't know they had year pages. I'll look at them now for entertainment.

I noticed this on the page. King Offa of Mercia founds an abbey at St Albans. Since the pub is in St. Albans, I'd speculate this was their origin. Workers get thirsty.

Socialism is the actual plague that it could not survive.

BINGO!

I thought I’d like that, but I saw a few early episodes and they were too dark for me.

I remember when it was on TV but don’t think I ever watched it.

I was interested in Midsomer because I generally like mystery and detective stories. I just didn’t like those, at least the ones I saw.

(I did like the one about the doctor in Cornwall - Doc ‘Martin’.)

The “Doc Martin” movie the seris is based on is better.
Martin is more “likeable” in the movie hence more believable.

I’ll have to look for it.

I mainly liked all the quirky townspeople.

even Brits went gaga for vindaloo.

Probably because the expression "English cuisine" is oxymoronic. After you die, if you go to heaven, you'll get a French cook. If you go to hell, you'll get an English cook.

The owners of that pub survived the plague but modern day communists destroyed them.

In Texas establishments need to have insurance, too. That’s a fair chunk of change.

Doesn’t surprise me. Iceland was pretty isolated for long time.

I sometimes wish we had kept some of our missing alphabet. It would make pronunciations a little more obvious sometimes.
