Shutting down after 12 Centuries

Survived the Black Death but couldn’t outlast Boris Johnson

The current operator of the pub in St. Albans announced on Friday that they have filed for bankruptcy, blaming “a sustained period of extremely challenging trading conditions” — a similar refrain to a number of historic British pubs that have closed during the pandemic.

“Along with my team, I have tried everything to keep the pub going. However, the past two years have been unprecedented for the hospitality industry, and have defeated all of us who have been trying our hardest to ensure this multi-award-winning pub could continue trading into the future,” Christo Tofalli, who ran the pub, said in a Facebook post. “It goes without saying I am heartbroken: this pub has been so much more than just a business to me, and I feel honored to have played even a small part in its history.”

The Ye Olde Fighting Cocks in St Albans, which poured its first drink in 793, has run into financial difficulties as a direct result of the pandemic. A sad sad day for British heritage and our Hospitality sector

A rare instance of a “Ye Olde” something actually living up to the name.

I’m sure it’s been closed down in its history.

It just came back. Can’t tell me anything operates for 1200 years with nothing bad happening.

Article says it was closed down as an impact from covid, but also says it survived other plagues.

Socialism is the actual plague that it could not survive.

And Jesus it survived insane kings and queens.

Now that’s what I call destroying a business!

Who should they sue?

The British government or the PRCs/CCP?

Even before the pandemic pubs were in trouble as immigrants shunned British traditions and even Brits went gaga for vindaloo. Midsomer Murders is a British mystery TV show where almost every episode included a side plot of a couple struggling to keep a pub afloat.

A rare instance of a “Ye Olde” something actually living up to the name.

I learned something recently that I'm surprised I'd never heard before. The Ye in this case (used as a definite article and not as the second-person pronoun) is actually pronounced thee. Interesting way was lost letters when transitioning from Olde English.

Usually the taxes. When I moved to the city where I live 30 years ago, there were little taverns every few blocks. Now almost all of them are gone. The liquor license went to $20k-$30k per year, plus the absurd taxes on the drinks themselves.

They ought to sue the ChiComs. That’s where this mess started, and everybody knows it. Unfortunately, such a lawsuit would go nowhere as everyone in power is covering for China.

Trump, however, put the virus blame right where it belonged. That was probably one reason why he was forced out.
