Yelp dropped a list Tuesday ranking the best pizza in America — while simultaneously celebrating the made-up holiday National Pizza Day and trying to hire its inaugural “Chief Pizza Officer.”
All that hullabaloo is to say: Yelp decreed that the top-ranked pizza spot in the U.S. is Cheese Board Pizza in North Berkeley, beating out New York City’s uber-popular (and troubled) Prince Street Pizza.
The charms of the restaurant co-op are apparent for anyone who’s stepped into the perpetually long line: Crisp pizza dough topped with a rotating list of fresh, always vegetarian toppings, with the free green sauce, makes for a stellar combo.
Many Bay Area shops rank high on this list — which could be a testament to either Yelp’s pervasiveness in the bay, or its emergence as the new pizza capital of America. (It’s more than likely the former.)

Joe's Pizza in New York was the real deal. My wife and I had that four years ago during a visit.
Spumoni Garden in Brooklyn by far the best pizza.
They bulldozed “Frankie, Johnny, & Luigi’s, Too” in Mountain View! What a God Awful shame. It was such a charming place and was there for decades dating back to when this was a normal, low-key place before tech thoroughly ruined it.
Couple of good shops in Los Altos - Spot Pizza and Skip’s Pizza. I like Spot a bit better.
Imho start in NYC and go 3000 miles east to Italia.
5.56mm
OK Los Altos is more doable. Thank you for the tips. We’ll give it a try. Have you been to Cicero’s in Cupertino?
Best pizza in America. Wonder how much they bribed someone to say that?
That photo has limes in the photo, pear, walnuts, cashews, caramelized onion, danish blue cheese, parsnips, roasted squash etc etc.
“Our pizzas never have meat”
Really? The best pizza in America is in my kitchen.
New Haven. Sally’s, Pepe’s, Modern, Bar....
Eh, there are places that make top notch pizzas in any number of cities. These claims that “(City) Pizzas” are the best are PR nonsense.
Palermos in Hollywood is as good as anybody’s. Or used to be.
But I can tell you without a doubt where the worst pizza was. Sydney, Australia when I was on R&R in 1969. Bread with red sauce and cheddar cheese. Horrible.
There’s a pizza parlor down near Bonsall, North San Diego County called Village Pizza. The Best! Whenever we visit my wife’s brother down there it’s a must stop.
Sure thing. Look at the little sausage slurper that wrote the story.
Gino’s in Chicago. I’m a deep dish man.
“Our pizzas never have meat”
I’ll bet you can get them with pineapple though...
I wonder how much this cost Cheese Board Pizza for the Yelp “Extra Special Premium Membership”?
BTW, Yelp is located in San Francisco, which isn’t too far from Berkeley - just across the bay. But I’m sure that this has nothing to do with the honor.
Vegetarian propaganda
That crap is pizza? Looks anemic.
Bosco’s Pizza in Abita Springs, Louisiana is the best piza i ate
Food is a matter of taste. The best of anything is those things you like so I don’t know how anyone can declare one pizza is the best. They could say it is very good but that just means THEY like it.
You know the gay bay wants that.
“Our pizzas never have meat”
Then it ain’t pizza
