Just take a look at what's been seen in some of the third world airlines with less-than-qualified pilots.
The “woke” culture has infected large areas of our lives over the last few years. Much of it has just been annoying, but a new example could actually be dangerous.
That is the push to hire and staff our airline cockpits with pilots chosen primarily for their gender or race, which I believe to be a very dangerous concept.
Before I comment further, I should explain my background and credentials to speak on the matter. I flew for nearly thirty-seven years, the majority of that time as a Captain, for Trans World Airlines on domestic and international routes. During that time I served as an instructor and line check pilot on several types of jet aircraft, training co-pilots and captains new to the equipment.
In this capacity I worked with females and members of various minority groups, including African-Americans, Hispanic-Americans and Asian Americans. All these pilots, as well as their Caucasian counterparts, were consummate professionals. That was because TWA hired new crew members only on essential criteria—flight experience

Recently, United Airlines announced a plan to establish a flight school to train new pilot candidates. These pilots will replace pilots reaching mandatory retirement age and allow for the airline’s planned expansion. There is nothing wrong with this concept,

I think it is safe to say that most HR managers are not qualified pilots. Not a one is trained to the level required of pilots needed to safely operate a modern airliner. So how will HR intervention affect the hiring process as time goes on, and where does woke culture come into play? To examine that situation, let’s go back to United’s new “Aviate Academy,”

I would like my pilot AWAKE, not WOKE.
Ping for your opinion of this.
Been there.
It ain’t good.
Flew with a pilot once who fell asleep. Think he was hung over.
One giant step toward Idiocracy.
These flight school graduates will get the First Officer jobs on the major’s subsidiary airlines, blocking those that work their way up on their own. Will not be easy for a white male to become an airline pilot.
On Oct. 1, 2018, Lion Air Flight 610, a Boeing 737-Max, crashed into the Java Sea shortly after takeoff from Jakarta, Indonesia. All 189 people onboard were killed. On March 10, 2019, another 737-Max, operated by Ethiopian Airlines as Flight 302, crashed shortly after takeoff from Addis Ababa. All 157 people on that flight died as well.
Initially, the blame was placed on the aircraft, causing all that series of B-737s to be grounded.
However, on closer examination it became clear that if the flight crews of those doomed aircraft had simply turned off the auto-pilot and other electrically controlled systems like the electric stabilizer trim and the auto-throttles, the aircraft could have been safely manually re-trimmed and landed without incident. Unfortunately, the captains, who on paper had many thousands of hours of flight time, had logged most of that utilizing the auto-flight systems. They simply weren’t proficient hand-flying the airplane. The co-pilots even less so.
Blame for the 737 MAX crashes was placed on poor design that allowed a single sensor failure to cause runaway elevator trim. However, the Ethiopian Airlines crew had the advantage of a bold letter warning that Boeing issued after the Lion Air crash describing the issue, outlining exactly what to do to counteract the issue, and still the aircrew didn't or couldn't follow the Boeing warning and respond correctly to save the aircraft, .
The Captain of the doomed flight went into Ethiopian Airlines' flight training program straight out of High School.
I have friend whose brother flies 737 “Max” airliners. He was asked, “Have you ever experienced the loss of control that caused the two “Max” airliners to crash overseas (killing everyone on board)”? The brother replied casually, “A couple of times. I just had to reach over and turn off the Pitch Compensation”.
That was easy for him to say. Not only did he have to know what was happening, HE HAD TO KNOW WHERE THE SWITCH WAS LOCATED! This, of course, took hours and hours of training, many in a realistic flight simulator. There are dozens of switches, if not hundreds, in the cockpit. He obviously, had the appropriate training.
When you’re taking off from an airport and the airliner suddenly pitches violently toward the ground, you don’t have time to pick up the airplane manual and search frantically for “Pitch Compensation”. It’s probably placed in the index by some geek who was writing it in his pajamas in his mother’s basement, under the heading “Algorithm R prime” or some other equally obscure term, anyway.
It’s that experience and training that makes flying safe. Your life depends on it. Don’t fly on any airline that brags about its “Affirmative Action” programs.
I have been following the racial hiring practices for airlines for a couple of years.
What airlines do not follow this practice?
I currently refuse to fly after a bad flight incident several years ago coupled with the current shortage of pilots and affirmative action hiring procedures, looks like I won’t be flying unless someone can point me to an airline that has skill and knowledge hiring practices.
How long before United airlines crashing planes become a regular thing?
Anytime you introduce quotas into any selection process ... you invite a possible lowering of standards into the process.
I would contend that there is not a possible lowering of standards but a guarantee of lowered standards. If someone makes it in due to a quota then they are in not because of actual technical/capable merit but due to some demographic criteria. That lowers standards. Any criteria other than objective capabilities, any criteria based on nonsensical non-factors like gender or skin color etc. represent a move away from getting the best available.
I rarely fly commercial - only for work. Oddly enough my new job (thanks to vaccine mandates forcing me out of my previous job) has me flying on two trips in the first two months...sigh Fortunately when I do have to fly for work I get to make all my own arrangements. No preferred carriers, hotels, nor car rental places like at my previous job. Personally United was mid-pack as far as I was concerned. No more. United (and American) are now last resort only.
It’s no coincidence that the person who crashed the F-35 when trying to land on a carrier is a female. Most likely had ‘relaxed’ physical training compared to males (or almost certainly would have washed out).
Working for the Bell System where/when the Nixon DoJ started its full court press to make Affirmative Action the law of the land, one of the old timers said, “No matter how you shake it, the cream will always come to the top.”
I guess there’s still a whole lotta shakin’ goin’ on, eh George?
Regarding the HR part; all they do is look at resumes then pass on likely candidates for interviews first by phone then in person by chief pilots and the instructor pilots to determine if they qualify for classes.
I say they force the people making these decisions and doing the hiring to be the first passenger group on said new-hire’s first check flight (or whatever it’s called).
“All these pilots, as well as their Caucasian counterparts”
Why not ‘European Americans’?
I do not care about the color or sex of my pilot. I care that he or she is in that left seat based on skill and talent.
A good friend of mine is a captain for American Airlines. I taught him how to fly gliders recently. He is Hispanic. He worked his way up. As a young man he did banner towing and charter. He finally got on with small regionals and finally American Airlines. He has earned his position as Captain. He knows how to fly!
