Need Manly Information. A family member is selling his big diesel truck and thinking of purchasing a Raptor. Two people disparaged the Raptor and said it was a "kids truck". Manly Freepers?

Raptor sounds manly enough to me. Tell him to buy an adventure motorcycle if he’s a real man...

Depends. Sometimes being smaller, more nimble, faster (and fearless) can be more effective when faced with large obstacles:

A good friend and neighbor has a Raptor, Baja version. It is a powerful, lifted truck with lots of high-end features.

It’s a great cowboy Cadillac with a very high zoom zoom factor - quite comfy and fast. A tad loud due to his tires.

It’s not a 250 super crew, from a git er done standpoint.

HE traded his F-250 supercrew diesel King Ranch for the Raptor, and is glad he did.

Speculation: The people disparaging the Raptor are likely older people who think there’s no replacement for displacement, yes?

The current Raptor is not a kids’ truck. It is popular with rich kids, but then so were Ferraris and Lambos and such in the 80s, so that’s not exactly new and people didn’t call the Countach or Testarossa ‘kids cars’.

The Raptor makes more power than many older diesels (450 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque) and is considerably cheaper to run. You can also make a few mods and get it to make quite a bit more power.

Verdict: The 2021 Ford F-150 Raptor takes all the good things from the F-150’s redesign and adds to them, making the wildest Ford pickup even better than its predecessor. Versus the competition: As great as the F-150 Raptor is, it’s overshadowed by the monster Ram 1500 TRX; it feels downright tame by comparison.Dec 7, 2021

You’re not driving a manly truck these days unless it’s electric.

You know what’s not manly?

Changing your mind of what you want and works best for you because some dumbasses made fun of you.

If that’s what he wants and he can afford it, what’s the problem? The 3.5l turbo V6 pulls like a fat block, btw.

A lot depends on the usage intended.

You can’t beat a diesel for towing big loads.

And if it’s an older diesel without a lot of expensive and troublesome emissions hardware, it’s a valuable keeper. A piece of equipment that probably will never be produced again in the USA.

If this is just something for bombing around town, yeah the Raptor is pretty cool.

I have a close friend who bought one new from the dealer, about 5 years ago. He still drives it, because it’s never left him stranded, but he’s never seemed completely happy with it, either. “It’s a truck” seems to be his summary of it.

it may depend on the intended use of the truck.

if the truck is used for work work, he needs a truck truck and not a toy. consider a f-350 lariat ultimate with a 7.3L (godzilla) gasoline engine. all in all, a much better truck. it can also tow stuff with ease. the godzilla engine confers bragging rights at the bar. the ultimate package includes creature comforts for long distance hauling and for dates.

That big diesel truck might be a high mileage, high maintenance, dog, needing some really expensive parts, like, say 2,000 dollars for brakes. Need more info as to why the trade in the first place. Earlier diesels, for instance , had really expensive starters. I’d love to heap krap on the Ford but need more dope as a starting point.

EPA diesel seem to be plagued with troubles. Old diesels you could put used oil in the tankand call it number 5 diesel.
