Those hoping to avoid one of the worst side effects of aging—bone, joint and muscle pain that doesn't go away—might need to exercise a lot harder and more often than previously believed.
According to a new study, only high levels of activity at least once a week—playing tennis, running, swimming, digging with a spade, or doing hard physical labor as part of your job—appears to help ward off chronic musculoskeletal pain in the long-term.
The study is the first to examine the experience of chronic pain alongside gender, BMI, age and wealth over a long time period.
Report co-author Dr. Nina Attridge, said all activity helped lower the chances of suffering pain but, over time, only high levels of physical activity appeared to lower the risk of someone developing musculoskeletal pain.
For the study, moderate exercise included activities such as dancing, walking, stretching and gardening.
Mild activity included activities such as doing laundry, vacuuming and DIY.
Dr. Niederstrasser says that "Such activity—any activity—does help people stay well and feel better than not exercising, but mild exercise does not appear to have a long-term effect on the development of chronic pain."
"Activity needs to not only be vigorous, it needs to be done at least once a week."
"A person who cycles, for example, once a month and whose only other activity was light housework would still be classed as sedentary."
The study found persistent pain was more common in women, possibly because of hormonal differences; in those who were obese or overweight, probably because extra weight adds a burden to the body's joints; and in those who were less wealthy, possibly because higher disposable income may enable people to seek extra care, in addition to that covered by insurances or national health services, to treat ailments and injuries.

My in-laws sold the farm and moved to golf retirement community and golf every day, sometimes twice a day. They’ve been married 60 years!
For those of us who’ve suffered debilitating
injuries, exercise described only
exacerbates the symptoms. I would love to
walk more than a block before the tears
start flowing. I refuse to take drugs that
place my brain in a different world.
(which most pain relieving drugs do)
I broke my neck 50 years ago, and tried
everything under the sun since to alleviate
the pain. I’ve learned to live with it
and watch tennis on tv.
Is your current pain from osteo arthritis or strictly a nerve issue?

Castor Oil & Pain:
“Call it what you wish, Voodoo, Witchcraft, “BS”, whatever, but it DID work for me. Having recently torn the cartilage in my left knee, simultaneously diagnosed “with a little arthritis” in the same, and swelling behind the knee. My Sport’s Ortho said that the swelling was common with the torn cartilage but should go down in time. I began searching on the Web for a magical pain relief remedy (other than my already supplementation of Glucosamine Sulfate, Chondrotin, Taurine, Collagen, HA, Cats Claw, Bromelain, MSM, etc., etc., etc - .all of which I have been taking for years due to 27 yrs of cycling but at almost 68yo, something had to give). One subject that kept surfacing on the Searches was an old time remedy of Castor Oil. I’m not in terrible pain, but it is a 24/7 aggravation, as anyone who has similar discomforts can attest to. I decided to give it a try; purchased a package of ladies’ cosmetic, cleansing pads (~3”x4”) and a small bottle of Castor Oil (CO), I placed a pad on a saucer, saturated the pad with CO (not dripping) and popped it into the microwave for about 35 secs. I, then placed the (105F) warm pad on my knee; wrapped my knee-pad with plastic wrap (to keep the CO from staining the heating pad) and then applied a heating pad, set to Med. heat. I left it on for about 1 hour and when I removed everything, I did a “test walk” -not only was my knee not stiff, and the swelling was 95% GONE!! I could walk with 100% less discomfort and this was 10x more effective than the Cortisone or three Hydraluronic Acid injections I had received in a two months period. The other nice thing, is that you don’t have to throw the saturated pad away; place in a Ziploc bag for the next application and just add a little more CO.
I generally apply this treatment daily, each time the knee feels better - I know it’s not going to remedy the situation 100%, but has made my life much better.”

castor oil
I started a regiment of swimming at a
military facility. (free) at a Dr’s
recommendation. It had no effect.
Yes, the person in the post described their use of an old-fashioned Castor Oil pack. Apparently our ancestors knew things.
I noticed that when we started to work at home that I was needing more exercise as everything would hurt when you did the simplest thing like moving stuff around my place or going for a short walk. Joint pain and or muscle pain. At work you would at least walk up and down the hallways.
I now have a stepper exercise machine which helps and I go out on 25 minute walk nearby a few times a week that I have mapped out. It helps quite a bit. Plus doing anything keeps the mind active too.
Appreciate the concern and the willingness
to help. I hope your list was a copy and
paste. That’s quite a list. I will
investigate some.
The older I get, the worse the pain becomes.
The last flare up put me three days on the
couch. Couldn’t move or get up. P***ed in a
bottle. Almost passed out from the added
back spasms.
I use the pool at the gym for exercise. I walk in the water..do aerobics..and Make swimming motions with my arms as i walk.
.
This seems to help with back and shoulder pain and it doesnt appear to be hard on joints. Then i use the wet steam room which also seems to help
That same castor oil treatment is used for helping with sleep issues
Low carb diet and fasting are the best.
