One (scary) explanation from the story:
Smith said he isn’t convinced the guns were in the water very long. He says they were wrapped in plastic, and we wiped away most of the corrosion in 30 minutes.
“It looked like it was something that someone would want to come back for,” he said.

Some years ago a friend of mine who was working at HillAFB was going through some old reconnaissance gear that had been in storage since the Vietnam War. He opened a light table and found an M60 machine gun. Probably wouldn’t have been smart to keep it.
They are not against the law here in Texas. Buy from a regular FFL, just like anything else. I came very close to buying one from Cabelas once, they had a used one for sale.

Back in '95 the Sportsman Guide had 100 round belts of 50 BMG for $110 shipped.
The belts also had tracer rounds mixed in.
