ZEBULON, N.C. — A 50-year-old man was found dead underneath a car while trying to steal a catalytic converter on Monday morning, according to officials with the Wake County Sheriff's Office.
Joshua Larry Diehl was underneath a disabled car when the jack he was using malfunctioned and was stuck pinned underneath the car on U.S. Route 64 at Debnam Road in Zebulon.
"It is unknown how long Diehl may have been under the vehicle before being discovered," officials said.
The owner of the car was on her way home from work on Sunday night and had to pull over because she had a flat tire, officials said. She had a friend pick her up and made plans to have the car towed on Monday morning.
The tow truck driver who arrived at the scene to pick up the disabled car found Diehl's body, according to authorities.

He would have been better off not bonding out on his December arrest.
They should prosecute the companies buying these stolen catalytic converters unless they can show proof of legal ownership.
..as one of my former co-workers loved to say, there is NO cure for stupid.....
Actually, only partly true. There is no cure for Living stupid. But dead stupid is a terminal cure.
Geez, must not have been wearing his Apple watch, or iPhone wasn’t handy. Poverty kills. Also, he forgot the Buddy System.
I have seen a few where they unknowingly cut off a muffler or resonator instead of the cat. Stupid is as…….
Agreed, likely they sell them or small garages, or through the black market. Another big theft is copper. Criminals will, crawl under houses that have been shut down for the winter months, and steal the copper pipes and wires.
I just looked up the parts house cost for a catalytic converter for my 2012 VW Jetta Sportwagen and it's $945.95.
There are some cheaper ones in the $350 range but they are "some fabrication required".
Then there's the installation costs.
I hate having to tow my car, only to find out that a dead guy was trying to steal my catalytic converter.
Ever since I know about this kind of thieves, I realized there will be a lot of jack malfunctionings in the process
They are scrapping them for the precious metals like platinum and palladium that the converters contain.
As I have told many people over the years that want to just use a hydrolic jack to hold up a vehicle, the only thing holding is a o-ring.
Why didn’t he gnaw off his torso like you read about in so many amazing survival stories?
The guys name didn’t happen to be Wile E. Coyote?
And the car maker (too heavy, insufficient ground clearance) and the concrete company (driveway too hard).
About a year ago I had a new Cat Converter put on my 2013 Jeep Compass,1,700 dollars parts and labor.
another COVID death.....
IIRC the honeycomb mesh is used in the production of Meth
They should leave everything in place until the insects are done with him.
