Youth’s overdose death renews pleas for Narcan in schools (fentanyl)

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - The death of a 13-year-old student who apparently overdosed on fentanyl at his Connecticut school has drawn renewed pleas for schools to stock the opioid antidote naloxone, as well as for training of both staffers and children on how to recognize and respond to overdoses.

The seventh grader was hospitalized Jan. 13 after falling ill at a Hartford school that did not have naloxone on hand. City officials vowed Wednesday to put the antidote in all city schools, as part of a wider drug use and overdose prevention strategy.

“Naloxone should be available in all schools, and there should be education on signs and symptoms of overdose and how to use this,” said Dr. Craig Allen, vice president of addiction services for Hartford HealthCare’s Behavioral Health Network. “Unfortunately, a horrible incident like this happens and suddenly everyone’s vision is 20/20.”

Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin said that because of the student’s young age, an opioid overdose did not immediately come to mind when the school nurse and first responders, who did have naloxone, treated him.

That’s why city officials are also proposing more training and curriculum changes aimed at educating staffers, students and community members in substance use awareness and prevention, he said.

In response to the student’s death, advocacy groups are repeating calls they’ve made for several years for schools to stock naloxone - often delivered as a nasal spray under the brand name Narcan - and train educators, support staff and students to recognize signs of opioid use and overdoses, especially because younger people are falling victim more frequently.

I remember when kids smoking cigarettes in the bathroom was about as bad as it got.

…..
This is a tragic situation no mater what the definition of “falling victim”is.

We must teach our children the real dangers of illicit drugs. In addition, since there are some stupid/evil people out there who would think it was fun to slip someone a harmful drug in a benign substance, children need to be taught not to eat or drink anything that they do not open from the commercial wrapper itself.

Yes, they do need to have Narcan available. It’s terrible, but this is the reality of our world these days.

There are ways to give Narcan....via the nasal passages.

Most EMS crews have them.....

There it is - right to the cranium - with a spray? I have no idea what fentynal attacks first but that might be a start. I fully expect to see this product on my Piggly Wiggly shelves by next week. Experimental, sure. It could save lives.

Hardly true in this case. I believe most of the Latinos here are from Puerto Rico.

The Sport and Medical Sciences Academy is one of the few college-preparatory academies in Hartford that has rigorous standards for admission, participation, and graduation.

My sons police department carry’s a dose for other officers. They let EMT’s administer it on OD’s. About 3 weeks ago they got a call about someone passed out at 2:00am near a canal in the town and it was about 15 degrees. Him and his lieutenant the watch commander arrived and some lady saw the woman and called it in and put a coat on her. My son and the other officer recognized her as a frequent flyer and examined her, she was already turning blue. The LT asked if my son had his narcam and told him to administer it she wouldn’t be alive by the time the EMT’s arrived.

My son administered it and she came back and he searched her and found 11 bags of meth on her and noted the amount as to be considered trafficking. The EMT’s arrived and took her to ER, said they had saved her life. Two weeks later my son got another call on her and ran her for warrants and the DA had issued arrest warrant for trafficking on the 11 ounces they found on her the night of her OD. My son said they had one homeless addict the EMT’s had used narcam on 3 times in one week.

Your son sees a lot, and people who criticize the police need to recognize how seeing tragedy and off the track lives so frequently can affect you. I’m sure it’s very hard. God bless him.

What an ignorant and stupid bunch of remarks you made. Narcan is not experimental, it is simple to use, and safe. It is administered as a nasal spray, much the same as any sinus spray. It works against most opioids, not just fentanyl.

It can and does save lives.

The worst ones for him are when kids are involved. He went to a domestic with another office a month or two ago and he said you could hear them screaming at one another and they knocked on the door and the other officer started talking to them and he started looking around the living room area they were standing in and heard a small infant, probably three or four months old they had in a type of bouncy seat.

While observing he noted a loaded syringe, cap off laying under the bouncy seat and walked over to confirm what he was seeing. He interrupted the other officer and the two donors and said what is this and why in the hell is it sitting under a baby? Oh it didn’t belong to either one of them they blathered. I guess the baby was sitting itself up for a hit then he replied. Then told them I don’t give a (*&^ about either of you two offing yourselves but your not going to have this around this baby, I’m calling child services and you two POS are going to jail regardless of the domestic call.

On the other hand he has let moms go with a warning or citation for motor vehicle offenses with kids in the car when he could have arrested them and seized the vehicles as long as the kids were in his judgement being taken care of.
