How C. elegans worms avoid getting poisoned
Phys Org ^ | 20 January 2022 | Eva Botkin-Kowacki

Javier Apfeld approached the question like a worm detective. Except, instead of solving a wiggly creature's murder, the biologist was trying to understand why worms didn't die, despite a deadly toxin's common presence in the environments in which they live.

The verdict: The worms know how to detect and dodge the chemical threat. A trick they use, as Apfeld and colleagues describe in a new paper published in PLOS Pathogens, is that they know how to get by with a little help from their food.

And, says Apfeld, an assistant professor of biology at Northeastern, understanding the worms' methods could help us understand how other creatures—including humans—that face that same toxic threat may stymie that chemical foe.

The worm in question is called Caenorhabditis elegans, and it's a type of microscopic roundworm often used as a model organism to study human diseases. One of the biggest threats to its existence is a common substance: hydrogen peroxide.

Hydrogen peroxide can be fatal for all kinds of organisms to encounter.

“Hydrogen peroxide can be fatal for all kinds of organisms to encounter.”

Yes indeed. One of my secret weapons any time someone got sick was a tub soak with 35% food grade tossed in.

It’s great stuff, H202! Just don’t give in to the temptation to chug it.

Why am I reading this, I ask. Yet I keep reading. Scientific articles are logical. It’s a relief to read something like this. It’s a break from the nonsense one has to wade through in order to keep up with trends.

The worms apparently are not mandated to take poisons.

“ Worms are always in style.”

I get much of my insight to politicians based on the similar behavior of microorganisms and othe parasites and pathogens. Researchers are so methodical and detailed in the reports of their observations.

“Scientific articles are logical.”

Such articles are SUPPOSED to be logical, but in recent years, the reader needs to be diligent in vetting such articles. The political poison has creeped or will creep into everything!

That is more to my point. I found this article easy to read a change from the usual. Ringworms are not on the list for censorship.

This is tge norm, however, and I do read and view all reports from the point of view of what is logical. I try to. That it is a lot of work to do so explains why this was delightful. And, again, descriptions of parasitic activities and habits are always helpful in explaining the same in many public figures who have much control over our lives.

To elaborate more, it’s about patterns, which is the basis of stories. We observe and predict behavior by following stories. The patterns of animal behavior tell a true story- and with no propaganda

I’m just doing my thing here, not working on media or politics, in 2015, I knew Trump would win and that Hillary and co. Would underestimate him. A lot of people did. But I did. I think it’s knowing patterns, stories, animal behavior

I knew they would never let him win again. That I knew more certainly.

I know he’s good at multitasking and could tweet debates with suburban housewives while settling Mideast conflicts and installing an embassy in Israel. Does anyone really know how loved he is in Israel? He is.

I knew he had been a great humble active employer

What is next I do not know. I’ll reverse engineer it. Anyone who works for him either turns out to be a spy a turncoat or put in jail. That’s an obstacle!

That happens to me a lot, i.e., that someone I think is all right becomes like an enemy. It’s not just me being a bad judge of character! lol

My favorite but unfortunately democrat cousin now plays dumb. This is new. She’s usually ‘so informed’ by NPR, steppinalloverus, her domineering husband now she “oh, I’ve turned off the news. I don’t watch any news now”.

Let others see if they can wrangle this dragon then clean up the mess. I know nothing. I’m going to Hawaii for the weekend.
