ESPN host Stephen A. Smith says he rang in the New Year hospitalized with COVID - and that doctors told him he would died if he hadn't been vaccinated.
He shared details about his serious bout with the virus Monday after returning to the air on the network's First Take, saying: 'It almost took me out.'
The 54-year-old began the episode by revealing he feared he might die after he was hospitalized with a 103-degree fever and double pneumonia on January 1.
'I didn't know if I was going to make it,' Smith said. 'They told me, had I not been vaccinated, I wouldn't be here. That's how bad I was.'
The hit show is filmed in Bristol, Connecticut, and Smith lives in New Jersey. Both states were hammered around the time of his diagnosis by a surge in cases driven by the highly-contagious Omicron-variant.

Gullible fool believes whatever he's told. How could anyone make such an assessment? From the very beginning we have known that COVID can be very mild, can be serious, can be fatal. That was before the vaccine. You survived COVID? That's nice. But you can't be sure the vaccine played any role in that at all. And some might suggest that the vaccine made you more susceptible.
My friend’s wife was out of work for three weeks with a bad case. She was fully vaxxed and boosted. My friend refused the jab, had a cold and loss of smell for 5 days. Worked through it.

What hospital did he go to? I’m sure he got it but he might had embellished the details. On ESPN, he was known for being “full of it” at times.

my genes are having to be studied. i am having to jump through hoops with minor tests before we go for the big one...whole genome or exome test.
what I can tell from the ones I have had so far is this:
You can have a lot of variations of “ unknown clinical significance” that may be affecting you but it may take science 50 years to decide that is the case.
For example, even ones classified as “benign” can turn out decades later to be pathogenic.
I have no doubt there is a big genetic component to the reaction to COVID as well as the reaction to the VaX
I have known variations in my genes for certain vaccinations. No one thought to think about that when my body went berserk after a vax and I only found out by accident
