A Better 9mm? Federal Introduces the 30 Super Carry Self Defense Handgun Cartridge
Field and Stream ^ | 16 jan 2022 | Richard Mann

Federal has introduced a new cartridge that has been specifically designed for those who carry a concealed pistol for personal protection. They’re calling it the 30 Super Carry. From an external and terminal ballistics standpoint, the 30 Super Carry will run right with the 9mm, but offers some advantages. It generates between 10 and 20 percent less recoil, for one thing. And maybe more importantly, given magazines of the same size, it offers a higher capacity than the .380 Auto or 9mm Luger. How did Federal achieve this? They borrowed from what they learned in 2008 while developing the .327 Federal Magnum.

A lot of people forget that the .380 was a dead round until about 15 years ago. I don’t think I even knew about it until ruger came out with the lcp.

So if this offers better performance then the 380 at the same price then good. This is coming from someone who owns several 380’s.

Remember the crazy .223 Timbs? A Remigton saboted .225 bullet pushed at 2000 fps.

"This round already exists. It’s called 7.62x25 tokarev. And it’s a cast iron b*tch." Yep... I like that bottle neck round. And you can get drill jigs to make them hollow points. But by default they are mean and go through a lot of mass.

Okay, so is the FBI.

Probably didn't word it right, but the point is, 9mm works fine.

I used to have a Springfield Omega 10mm years age, the neighbor thought I was shooting a 12 gauge. Wish I still had it.

Years ago I thought the 9mm a substandard cartridge. Today with Hornady and others ammunition it is deadly.

I myself prefer my Glock 35 in a 40 S&W. It is not a conceal carry weapon as it is large. If I carry concealed it is 9mm Glock 43 9mm with hot ammunition.

Prvi Partisan makes jacketed hollowpoints in 7.62 Tok. They’re screamers.

Cool. I had one years ago. Liked the cheap surplus ammo back in the day. Wouldn’t mind getting another one.

I haven't looked at the specs yet, but I reload all of my center fire cartridges. The 9mm is not a straight walled brass casing. It is slightly tapered. The straight wall cases e.g. 45Auto, 40S&W, 10mm are easier to reload and consistently headspace on the case mouth. It makes them usable in a revolver cylinder without need of "moon clips". The flaring and crimping of the case mouth is easier with a straight wall.

Let's see how this plays out. The ubiquitous nature of 9mm lead to high quality and choice in suppliers. Bringing out a new caliber risks being an orphan. I found a very nice Tanfoglio 1911 pattern pistol at a local pawn shop. It had been there for a couple months. A trip to Sportsmanswarehouse was revealing. The pistol was chambered in 38 Super. There was exactly ONE box of ammo from a single supplier. No thanks. I'm already smarting from the 5.7x28 supply shortage.

I'm waiting on my LGS to notify me when the S&W M&P 2.0 4.6" 10mm arrives.

My wife has a first run P365XL. She thought it would be an upgrade from the P365. It was disappointing. When performing the trigger reset test, the slide was locked up. She had multiple instances where the slide failed to return to battery. We usually take a bucket of 115 gr Remington 9mm to the range. Sig makes ammo specifically for the 365. I'm not certain if that would make a difference.

18 months after my wife purchased her P365XL, I added one with the optics kit to my stash. I haven't mounted the red dot yet, but initial checkout seems to indicate the problems with the early releases is resolved. The red dot on the M&P 2.0 9mm fixed my vertical stringing due to my progressive lenses. Overall, I think my P365XL will be a keeper.

And relative to any acceptable self-defense round, 9mm is cheap.

I love the 10mm. Multiple pistols and a revolver in that caliber. If you want to get the rangemaster's attention, touch off a 454 Casull with Hornady 300 gr @ 1500 fps. Great fireball. Huge boom. Central nervous system rattler. A box of 20 will leave your palms stinging and your body feeling significantly beat up. The Ruger SRH 454 Casull 7.5" is my preferred beastie. The S&W 460 Magnum and 500 Magnum have similar results, but the ammo is much more expensive.

That hasn’t been helped by ammo cost. I have a range membership and try to go every week and run a box through the S&W. It’s hard on the wallet but you gotta keep that muscle memory.

I didn't renew my indoor range membership in 2021. COVID arrived in 2020. I had renewed the couples membership in Nov 2019 for $500. As Nov 2021 approached, the range management called seeking a renewal. Nope. I only got to the range TWICE in 2020. $250 per visit. It's a 100 mile round trip, so add the travel cost as well. In prior years, we were at the range every weekend and kept a 350 round bucket of 9mm ready for the weekly foray. In 2021, I spent $80 for the outdoor range membership as well. Never set foot on the range. It expired again with the key unscratched by the lock cylinder for the 2nd consecutive year.

Ammo prices and COVID restrictions are putting limits on my range trips. It can't be mitigated with reloading because there are no primers for sale. Brass, bullets and powder are present sporadically.

Bought mine last fall and the RomeoZero is installed.

Did some trigger work and just love it.

It doesn't like Tula ammo, so I only use brass now that prices have fallen.
