Just off Furness Peninsula on England’s west coast, lonely Piel Island—with its castle from the 1300s and over-300-year-old public house, The Ship Inn—is in want of someone with the right mindset, and a penchant for living in solitude, to take over her lease, run the pub, and care for the island.
As for the said kingship, that too is in the bargain—and it’ll almost be official. The inn’s first recorded landlord, Edward Postlethwaite, served the role from 1746 to 1766. And since the 1800s, according to local authorities, the title “King of Piel” has been bestowed on those who filled the post. An initiation rite began—involving sitting in an antique chair, holding a rusty saber, and having beer poured over one’s head, while wearing a helmet—and today, both title and ritual live on.
After the last “lord” terminated his contract early, a temporary partnership organization in 2021 stepped in to ensure the important heritage site opened in July. Now, Barrow-in-Furness (the local town) council is seeking the right person to take the reins and run the pub.

Does it include a supply of masks?
In the article it says that “You need a dedication for peace and quiet.”
Sounds like my kind of place.
BTW, it looks like there is a small pond there. It cant be fresh water? Has to be salt water..
lord heavy metal king of piel has a ring to it... 😀...
Masks...not so much
but a watchcap, sweater, and neck scarf may be essential.
They could use the island for filming something like Game of Thrones.
Too crowded.
Why not? A small boat would do the trick.
Though I would imagine a strong ocean gale would send you seeking shelter deep inside the castle on occasion.
In the details, you lease the island from the town, and you also pay out of your own pocket in order to maintain the island (except for certain emergencies involving a few facilities such as “the toilet block” and “the jetty”).
You are expected to hire necessary staff and operate the public amenities, and to have prior experience as such an operator (ie you also own a pub somewhere else).
Power (energy) is required to be “GREEN.” And, that has yet to be established.
No mention of How to Repel Boarders (your duty to defend).
You do get to say when and what is open; but, there is an expectation by the town, that you will attend to the work. What the island has to offer, is seasonal - sounds like summer months.
I would guess you charge enough to cover expenses.
Sounds like they basically need a bartender with a big ego. AOC?
With a dozen million dollars, and more importantly, permissions, it could be rebuilt into a comfortable place for tourism, recreation, and scientific crews.
1) Create a protected cove next to it with idea of accumulating sand and turning it into a sandbar on which can be grown plants. Next to that build a fishing pier.
2) Refurbish the castle. Heat the rooms with tile stoves.
There’s a job for the Markles. Just Harry and MEghan can get their crowns and a castle.
Probabaly the previous occupiers want out as they know the island will disappear beneath the seas any time soon owing to to globull warming and rising sea levels.
