The police department reports that the mountain lion had entered the main lobby area of a condominium, prompting concern. The department responded and was able to confine the animal in a secure space with assistance from property management, at which point the animal was shot with a dart and tranquilized.

Upon further investigation, it was determined that the mountain lion was in a poor condition of health and emaciated, which ultimately resulted in the animal being euthanized.

“Why kill it?”

Because it is a dangerous animal that has lost its fear humans. It was looking for dog, a cat, or a person to eat.

It wasn’t tame, but was habituated.

From the pictures, it doesn’t look quite that emaciated. Vets might have brought it back to health and released it.

Are mountain lions a real problem in condos in Colorado?

“According to the Vail Police Department, the mountain town department responded to two different calls related to the same mountain lion in the area of Lionshead Village on January 8.”

It was in the Mountains and somebody put a condo there?

How do you know that?

I recall a story from China, where a Panda who was ailing came down to a house, wailing, and apparently trusting the people inside to help it.

There are a lot of things going on with animals that we still don’t understand.

Pretty kitty, but I wouldn’t let it sleep on the foot of my bed at night.

Why kill it? Surely they could have just released it back to the wild.
= = =

It was too old and emaciated.

Just like us older citizens, seeking health care.

They are conditioning us.

Same thing happened at the Abby in Canon City Colorado about twenty years ago A cougar wandered in while there was a lady in there praying My guess is she started praying much harder at about that time. https://museum.canoncity.org/?p=4347

The cat’s pelvis (hipbones) were outlined, perhaps indicating that he was starving. Looks like he was still shedding his winter coat.

Lock myself in my apartment, and call up all the vets and animal rescue people I know.

That doesn’t mean that they’d be correct in simply killing it.

Who decided to shoot it, anyway?

They are still pretty rare in Dallas. So rare, in fact, that they used to claim that there weren’t any. Until one went and got itself killed.

The old story was that the prints were just from a bobcat (which are plentiful in some residential neighborhoods) with big feet.

I wish I could condition my little DSH cat to stop sleeping on my legs all night. But he’s impervious to any attempt at discipline.

What?!

FTA:Upon further investigation, it was determined that the mountain lion was in a poor condition of health and emaciated, which ultimately resulted in the animal being euthanized.

~~~~~••
“Euthanized” means that the animal was killed out of mercy. It was on very poor health, apparently.
Cats who come into town are usually either really hungry or juveniles who don’t know yet to avoid people.
Apparently it was in poor health, and there wasn’t much they could do.
Know it? Maybe not. Statistical probability, yeah, it was looking for lunch. The animal does not appear to be injured, it does not look emaciated. It was looking for an easy lunch.
Wild animals are not like us. They don’t think like us or behave like us. They don’t have any kind of moral or ethical code.
Cougars are very dangerous. Unlike black bears which will, for the most part, leave you alone if you leave them alone, cougars are aggressive. They are also territorial, which means if you take them away and drop them off in another cougars territory, they’ll fight each other. Or, it would find another neighborhood to wander into.
