Use of certain prescription meds linked to COVID-19 mortality (Can be worthwhile to get on prescriptions if having covered health issues)
Medical Xpress / BMJ Open ^ | Jan. 10, 2021 | HealthDay / Arthur W Wallace

Posted on 01/10/2022 1:03:05 PM PST by ConservativeMind

A potential COVID-19 survival benefit is suggested in association with initiation or continuation of an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACE-I), an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB), or metformin for hospitalized patients, according to a study published in the December issue of The BMJ.

Arthur W. Wallace, M.D., Ph.D. and colleagues classified patterns of ACE-I, ARB, beta-blocker, metformin, famotidine, and remdesivir use and captured mortality among 9,532 hospitalized patients with COVID-19 infection.

The researchers found that discontinuation of an ACE-I was associated with an elevated risk for death (odds ratio, 1.4), while the risk for death was reduced in association with initiating or continuous ACE-I use (odds ratios, 0.3 and 0.6, respectively). Statistically significant associations of similar direction and magnitude were seen with ARB and metformin use. When accounting for preexisting morbidity and propensity score adjustment, results were unchanged.

"Our findings not only support continuation of ACE-I, ARB, and metformin medication among hospitalized patients with COVID-19, but suggest benefit for initiation in patients with indication for therapy," the authors write. "We also found evidence consistent with benefits for the same strategy in patients with COVID-19 who are not hospitalized."

I am not a fan of getting on prescriptions, but if your underlying health conditions are not otherwise treatable by diet, exercise, or supplements, please give prescription a consideration. Normalizing our body’s systems helps prevent other cascading concerns, such as a bad COVID outcome.

English please?

Will Famotidine help or hurt? Back in March 2020 when my doctor thought I might have Covid, she told me to take Famotidine along with the prescriptions she gave me.

I have to take it occasionally anyway for reflux and acid.

I take metformin and a little bit of lisenopril. Been trying to ween off of lisinopril as my blood pressure drops with weight loss.

Article was hard to read, but sounds like I should get a little more consistent on taking both.

This is saying that taking one or more of these drugs lowers the death rate for people with COVID-19.

For some of the drugs, people may still benefit by taking them when having COVID-19, even if the person has no health reason to take it when not infected. For other drugs listed, it would benefit people if taken both during COVID and after infection, because they may have had previously untreated conditions those drugs were meant to address, such as high blood pressure.

_______________

CAN A HEARTBURN DRUG HELP DOCTORS TREAT COVID-19?

https://news.virginia.edu/content/can-heartburn-drug-help-doctors-treat-covid-19

Excerpt:

“The team’s analysis, which appeared in the journal Signal Transduction & Targeted Therapy in July, showed that the data supported findings from other smaller-scale studies. When delivered at high doses (the equivalent of about 10 Pepcid tablets), famotidine appears to improve the odds of survival for COVID-19 patients, especially when it is combined with aspirin. It also seems to hinder the severity of disease progression, making patients less likely to reach the point where they require intubation or a ventilator.”

This seems like the reverse of the early analysis that said ace inhibitors allowed Covid to flourish more?

Metformin produced by Amneal Pharmaceuticals and Apotex—were involved in a recall by the FDA in 2021, due to a cancer causing agent called N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA).

Here is a medical journal article from June 2021 talking about this type of stuff. The best drugs have numbers like -9 to -10 related to reducing the attachment of the spike protein of the virus to the body. Ivermectin has a number of -7.7. (Article is way above my understanding!)

Thank you! When she thought I might have it was when it first started and they didn’t test if you didn’t have a high fever. They didn’t know much about it.

She told me to take the Famotidine and gave me prescriptions for Prednisone, Z-Pak, two cough meds, my asthma inhaler Albuterol, and some other stuff. It took a month before I felt much better and a long time before I actually felt well. I thought it was my usual asthma/bronchitis coming on, but it felt different.

Some folks have low blood pressure, so they wouldn’t be able to take any blood pressure lowering meds...

Do note that this study apparently did not find benefit with just taking Famotidine with COVID, but other studies have found benefit when that is at least coupled with other therapies.
